AceShowbiz - 88 Films has announced that Magnificent Bodyguards, the 1980s martial arts classic starring Jackie Chan, will make its global 3D Blu-ray debut on November 10. The release arrives as a 2-Disc set pairing a Real-D 3D Blu-ray with a standard 2D Blu-ray option.

The edition features a brand new 2K restoration sourced from the original camera negatives. According to the distributor, this marks the first time the film has been made available in 3D on Blu-ray anywhere in the world, following earlier 2D-only releases on various video formats in North America.

Magnificent Bodyguards was directed by Wei Lo, the filmmaker behind The Big Boss and Fist of Fury, and holds a notable place in Hong Kong cinema history as the territory's first 3D production. After helping launch the career of Bruce Lee, Lo aimed to showcase his newest discovery, Chan, by having his martial arts moves break out of the screen.

The story follows Lady Nan, played by Wang Ping, who must transport her sick brother through the treacherous Stormy Hills to the capital city to reach the only doctor with a cure. Most of the dangers along the road come from bandits eager to attack travelers. Lord Ting Chung, played by Chan, offers to serve as her bodyguard to save her brother's life.

Recognizing the journey is not a one-man job, Chung recruits others to the team, including a leather smith played by Siu-Lung Leung, better known as Bruce Leung, and the ruthless Tsang, played by James Tien. The group encounters attackers determined to stop the sickly brother from reaching his medical appointment, and Chung begins to sense royal intrigue involving his ailing client.

In the film, Chan, Tien and Leung battle monks, bandits and royal soldiers in 3D, with blows and weapons directed at the viewer. The 3D Blu-ray release is positioned to give longtime fans the chance to experience the action as it was originally intended.

The bonus materials include 2.0 Cantonese dual mono with English subtitles, 2.0 Mandarin dual mono with English subtitles, the classic English dub, and an English dub with alternate music cues. Also included are an audio commentary by Frank Djeng and F.J. DeSanto, the featurette Punching Into the 3rd Dimension with James Mudge on Magnificent Bodyguards, and the featurette Magnificent Bodyguards - A New Dimension in Action? by Steve Lawson. Remastered Mandarin and English trailers round out the package.

The official trailer for the release has been made available, offering a look at the restored footage ahead of the November 10 street date.
