AceShowbiz - Justina Machado got candid about dating apps, turning 50, and achieving her lifelong dream of performing on Broadway during a recent appearance on the podcast How Hard Can It Be? with Diana Maria Riva.
In the episode, Machado joined host Diana Maria Riva to discuss a range of personal topics, including the double standards she has encountered on dating apps. The actress, known for her roles in Real Women Have Curves, One Day at a Time, and The Horror of Dolores Roach, also opened up about finding joy and confidence after turning 50.
“Turning 50 was… I hated it, and there was not anything that was fun for me. I was super depressed about it,” Machado admitted. “Even though I was working and I had an incredible birthday, I had just done Dolores Roach. I think I just did the pilot when I turned 50. And then I had this big thing, I went to the DR and with a bunch of friends and it was fabulous. But I was pretending to be okay with it. And then, I don't know what happened. I just became okay.”
Despite her initial struggles with turning 50, Machado went on to achieve a major career milestone: originating a role on Broadway. “Always wanted to originate a role and always wanted to be nominated. And I forgot to say I'd like to win it… And even when I was in that, I guess I realize now what a big accomplishment that is,” she said.
Machado also touched on the disparity in healthcare for women experiencing menopause, noting a shortage of progesterone. “There's a shortage of progesterone. I mean, if you don't take progesterone with the estrogen, that can cause cancer. There's a worldwide shortage right now because honestly, at the end of the day, I hate to say that, but a lot of times they don't give a shit about a woman,” she said.
Reflecting on self-worth and confidence, Machado urged younger women to appreciate themselves. “I feel more confident about myself than I did when I was younger, and I looked way better back then! And so, I just try to tell these young women to just, oh my God, just appreciate where you are. You know what I mean? And know your worth and your power because there's so much power and so much worth and…what a waste of time,” she said.
The podcast, hosted by Riva, is produced by iHeartMedia’s My Cultura Podcast Network and Hyphenate Media Group. New episodes are released every Thursday and are available on the iHeartRadio app and other podcast platforms.
Machado and Riva have been longtime friends, and their chemistry was evident throughout the conversation. The episode also touched on the “FUPA revelation” and society’s “expiration date on women,” which Machado called “total BS.”
