AceShowbiz - Russell Andrews recently disclosed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS, aiming to boost awareness during ALS Awareness Month.
The 64-year-old actor, known for his roles in Better Call Saul, Insecure, and Straight Outta Compton, shared that his diagnosis came last fall after he experienced a variety of health issues. These included persistent "twitches" and "pinched nerves" in his neck, symptoms that prompted further medical evaluation.
Due to losing his health insurance amid the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, Andrews was unable to seek immediate medical attention. Once his coverage was restored, he promptly consulted a physician who advised seeing a neurologist. Reflecting on the chain of events, Andrews told CNN host Elex Michaelson, "One thing led to another."
Since his diagnosis, Andrews has teamed up with the ALS Network, an organization he credits with providing invaluable support not only to him but also to his fiancée, actress Erica Tazel. He described the experience as humbling and emphasized the welcoming community he found, saying it felt like joining a deeply caring family that has guided them through the complexities of care and awareness.
Despite the challenging prognosis, Andrews and Tazel remain committed to their relationship and plan to marry. Tazel has taken on the role of caretaker, expressing her steadfast support on the same news program, stating, "At least now we know what it is, and I still want to be your wife."
ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurological disorder that impacts nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease leads to paralysis over time, causing a gradual loss of muscle control and speech difficulties. Currently, there is no cure for ALS.
In a related note, actor Eric Dane, known for his work on Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, passed away from ALS in February at the age of 53. He had publicly revealed his diagnosis just 10 months prior.
Russell Andrews' openness about his condition highlights the ongoing need for awareness and support for those affected by this devastating disease.
