AceShowbiz - Darwin's iconic Mindil Beach became the vibrant setting for the annual BASSINTHEGRASS festival on Saturday night, May 16, 2026. Drawing nearly 12,000 music lovers, this event once again showcased a dynamic lineup of over 20 international and Australian artists in one of Australia's most unique live music environments.
Headlining the festival was Denzel Curry, the US rapper known for his intense performances. Swedish electronic duo Galantis also delivered an electrifying set, alongside the UK's Venjent and Morty. The festival's international flavor was further enriched by US act AYYBO and South Korea's Oktae, joining Australian favorites such as Peking Duk, The Teskey Brothers, The Living End, Ball Park Music, and Mallrat. This all-ages event attracted a diverse crowd, with Tourism and Events NT revealing that 20% of attendees were visitors to the Northern Territory, highlighting the festival’s broad appeal.
Galantis DJ Christian Karlsson expressed deep admiration for the festival experience, stating, "It's an absolutely mind-blowing experience. I didn't know anything, but I knew that Australia always, always deliver. I couldn't even imagine how mind-blowing this would be. Hey, come to Darwin - Darwin is the number one spot."
Local band Playlunch's lead singer Liam Bell also praised the event's atmosphere, saying, "It's been amazing to be on the lineup with all these other amazing acts. I'm not even sure we have stuff like this as good in Victoria. We've had some laksa, and it's changed our lives - but also, obviously the people are amazing, the vibes are amazing."
Suzana Bishop, CEO of Tourism and Events NT, emphasized that the festival’s magic extends beyond the music. She noted, "Brilliant performances are just part of what makes BASSINTHEGRASS so memorable. It's the combination of world-class live music, Darwin's natural beauty, warm dry season weather, location on Mindil Beach, incredible food and Top End experiences that makes it unlike any other."
The festival weekend also overlapped with a major AFL event at TIO Stadium, where just over 11,900 locals and visitors watched the clash between the Gold Coast Suns and Port Adelaide. This convergence of events boosted Darwin’s hotel occupancy to 70% for the weekend, marking an increase of around 10 percentage points compared to the previous year, underscoring the region’s growing attraction as a destination for entertainment and tourism.
Overall, BASSINTHEGRASS 2026 reinforced its status as a premier music festival, blending exceptional talent with the natural charm of Darwin’s outdoor setting. With a mix of international stars and homegrown acts, the event continues to captivate audiences and contribute significantly to the Territory’s cultural and economic landscape.
