The first season featured a strong ensemble including Bobby Cannavale as Detective Pete Marino, Jamie Lee Curtis portraying Dorothy Farinelli, Ariana DeBose as Lucy Farinelli Watson, and Simon Baker in the role of Benton Wesley. Zabka is famous for his role as Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid franchise and its sequel series Cobra Kai.

Besides starring, Kidman and Curtis also serve as executive producers alongside Patricia Cornwell and series creator Liz Sarnoff, who will all return for the second season. The show is a collaborative production between Amazon MGM Studios, Blumhouse Television, Blossom Films, Comet Pictures, and P&S Projects.

The Scarpetta series is an adaptation of the Kay Scarpetta novels, which span eight books published between 1990 and 2023. The titles include Postmortem (1990), All That Remains (1992), Cruel & Unusual (1993), The Body Farm (1994), From Potter's Field (1995), Cause of Death (1996), The Last Precinct (2000), and Blow Fly (2003). The books’ protagonist was inspired by Marcella Farinelli Fierro, a real-life forensic pathologist and former Virginia chief medical examiner who was one of the early women certified by the American Board of Pathology in forensic pathology.

Fierro earned her doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine after studying biology at D'Youville College. She served as Virginia’s chief medical examiner from 1994 until her retirement in 2008 and continued to contribute to the field through teaching and mentoring.

While there is no official release date for the second season of Scarpetta as of now, industry speculation suggests a 2027 premiere. Fans of the crime thriller eagerly await the continuation of the series, anticipating the new characters and storylines the expanded cast will bring to the screen.
