AceShowbiz - Fox has announced a reboot of the classic series Highway to Heaven set to premiere in the 2027-28 television season. The network revealed on Wednesday that Jason Katims, known for his work on Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, will serve as the executive producer and showrunner for the new version.
The reboot aims to introduce both longtime fans and new viewers to the enduring themes of Highway to Heaven, focusing on compassion, humanity, and the power of second chances. The original series aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989 and starred Michael Landon, who also created the show, as Jonathan, an angel sent back to Earth to assist people in need of divine help. Victor French co-starred as Mark, Jonathan’s human companion. The show was a beloved hit, running for five seasons.
In addition to the upcoming series, a reboot movie aired on Lifetime in 2021, featuring Jill Scott and Barry Watson, continuing the legacy of the franchise. Katims expressed enthusiasm about bringing a modern perspective to the story, stating, “The idea of telling a very grounded, human story about an angel feels immediately emotional to me – and fun.” He added that he is excited to explore a narrative about an angel striving to do better than he did as a human.
As anticipation builds for the new Highway to Heaven reboot, fans are invited to share their thoughts and suggestions on casting, especially who should take on the role of Jonathan in this fresh take on a timeless series.
