AceShowbiz - Motor City is gearing up for its official theatrical release on July 24, 2026, according to an announcement from Independent Film Company. Alongside the release date reveal, the studio also confirmed the teaser trailer will debut on May 6. A striking poster was unveiled as well, featuring stars Alan Ritchson and Shailene Woodley sharing a cigarette, hinting at the film’s gritty atmosphere.
The story is set in 1970s Detroit and follows Ritchson as John Miller, a man freshly released from prison who embarks on a tense and violent quest for vengeance after being wrongfully framed by a gangster for a crime he did not commit. This role adds to Ritchson’s established resume in the thriller genre. He currently stars as Jack Reacher in the Prime Video series Reacher, which adapts Lee Child’s novels about the Army veteran turned investigator. The third season premiered last year to critical acclaim, holding a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with season four in post-production slated for release sometime in 2026.
Ritchson’s other notable credits include roles in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Fast X, Smallville, Blue Mountain State, Blood Drive, Titans, and the Netflix sci-fi film War Machine. Alongside him, the cast of Motor City features Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Pablo Schreiber, Ben McKenzie, Lionel Boyce, Amar Chadha-Patel, and Rafael Cebrián.
The film is directed by Potsy Ponciroli, known for Old Henry and Greedy People, with a screenplay penned by Chad St. John. St. John also serves as a producer, joined by Greg Silverman, Jon Berg, and Cliff Roberts in the production roles.
Motor City had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in August 2025 during the Venice Spotlight category. It debuted alongside films such as Calle Málaga, Hijra, It Would Be Night in Caracas, A Loose End, Made in EU, Silent Rebellion, and Tired of Killing: Autobiography of an Assassin. Among these, Calle Málaga won the Armani Beauty Audience Award. The thriller received generally positive reviews, securing a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time.
The project has been in development since the early 2010s, initially with Warner Bros. attached as the producing studio. Several high-profile actors were once in talks to lead, including Chris Evans, Dominic Cooper, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Gerard Butler. However, due to scheduling conflicts and ongoing production delays, none of these actors remained attached. Ritchson joined the cast in 2023, and principal photography began in 2024.
After spending recent years portraying Jack Reacher on television, Ritchson is set to return to the big screen with this intense thriller. The July 24 release date positions Motor City as a mid-summer entry for audiences craving action-packed revenge dramas.
This latest announcement, including the teaser trailer release and poster reveal, is generating excitement among fans of gritty crime films and Ritchson followers alike. The film promises a blend of high-stakes tension, period setting, and compelling performances from its talented ensemble.
With a runtime of 103 minutes, the film is categorized as an action crime drama. Executive producers include John Friedberg and Chris Bosco, supporting the core production team. As the release date draws near, anticipation continues to build for what could be one of the summer’s standout thrillers.
