AceShowbiz - The hit sports romance drama Heated Rivalry captivated audiences when it debuted in late 2025 on Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the U.S., quickly becoming a pop culture sensation. Just three months after the first season concluded, an exciting new adaptation is set to premiere this spring, expanding the show's cultural footprint in an unexpected way.
Deadline has revealed that an unauthorized musical parody of Heated Rivalry will open at New York’s 6th Floor Theater. Previews for the Off-Broadway production begin on Tuesday, May 12, with the official opening night slated for May 26. The show is scheduled to run for eight weeks, following a string of successful sold-out concert performances earlier in March.
This parody diverges from the original series’ cast, with Jay Armstrong Johnson and Jimin Moon stepping into the roles inspired by the original leads Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander. Johnson is recognized for his work in Broadway’s Parade and the North American tour of Moulin Rouge. Moon’s Broadway credits include Sunset Boulevard and Aladdin. Supporting cast members include Ryann Redmond, Cherry Torres, and Ryan Duncan.
The musical’s storyline humorously centers on a group of Broadway actors who mistakenly believe they are auditioning for the second season of Heated Rivalry. The show features a "bop-infused score," along with memorable cameos from characters like Rose Landry and Ilya’s well-noted attributes, and includes time jumps that even the actors find confusing. According to the official synopsis, audiences can expect to be “hot, bothered, and probably saying, ‘...Girl!’” as they relive all the tear-inducing moments from the original series on a more intimate stage.
Alan Kliffer directs and produces the parody, while Dylan MarcAurele provides the book and lyrics. Choreography is handled by Brooke and Tiffany Engen, with Sully Rossen designing the scenic elements. Costume design is led by Brendan McCann, Devin Cameron oversees lighting, and Germán Martinez manages sound design. This production joins a long list of popular shows, movies, and books that have previously received the musical parody treatment, including Friends, Scream, Carrie, The Exorcist, The Real Housewives, and Harry Potter.
Heated Rivalry originated from the bestselling Game Changers book series by Rachel Reid, which currently includes six novels with a seventh, titled Unrivaled, set for release in June 2027. The TV adaptation was developed by Jacob Tierney, who serves as showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer.
The series follows the secret relationship between the two hockey stars Ilya and Shane, who publicly maintain a fierce rivalry despite their private romance. This complex dynamic unfolds over eight years, blending themes of love, ambition, and identity within the competitive world of Major League Hockey.
Since its premiere, Heated Rivalry has become Crave's highest-rated original show and ranks among HBO Max's most successful acquired series. It has been met with critical acclaim, boasting a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and winning Outstanding New TV Series at the GLAAD Media Awards. The show’s ensemble cast includes François Arnaud, Christina Chang, Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, Callan Potter, Franco Lo Presti, Kamilla Kowal, Yaroslav Poverlo, Slavic Rogozine, Dylan Walsh, Benjamin Roy, Kolton Stewart, and Sophie Nélisse alongside leads Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams.
Fans of the series can anticipate the arrival of Heated Rivalry season 2, which is currently in development. Although a release date has not yet been announced, it is expected to premiere in spring 2027 after production begins this summer.
The musical parody’s launch adds a fresh dimension to the show’s ongoing cultural impact, offering fans a new and entertaining way to engage with the story.
