AceShowbiz - Martin Short is widely regarded not just as a national treasure but as a continental one, thanks to his remarkable career as a Canadian comic actor and Hollywood star. Now, a new Netflix documentary titled Marty, Life is Short aims to honor his enduring legacy.
The documentary is directed by Lawrence Kasdan, a highly respected filmmaker known for works such as The Big Chill, Wyatt Earp, and Body Heat. Kasdan’s impressive career includes four Oscar nominations, and he is also the father of filmmaker Jake Kasdan. Alongside Kasdan, the production team features Sara Bernstein, Meredith Kaulfers, Christopher St. John, Justin Wilkes, and Blair Foster. The documentary is executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard through their company Imagine Documentaries, a division of Imagine Entertainment.
Marty, Life is Short showcases never-before-seen archival footage and intimate interviews with some of the biggest names in entertainment who have been influenced by or worked closely with Short. The film offers a heartfelt look into the life and impact of one of the most influential comedians of his generation.
The trailer opens with a voiceover from actor and longtime friend Steve Martin, who perfectly encapsulates Short’s charismatic personality. Martin humorously notes, "Let’s say you’re gonna host a dinner party and invite Marty. If Marty can’t come, you cancel the party." This quote highlights the outsized presence and affection that Short commands despite his relatively small stature.
Other notable stars featured in the documentary include Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, the late beloved actress, and Tom Hanks. Yet, it is comedian John Mulaney who perhaps delivers the most succinct tribute, stating simply, "Marty is good at life."
While the documentary celebrates his career and influence, it does not shy away from the personal hardships that Short has endured. He lost his oldest brother at the age of 12, and both of his parents passed away within a two-year span. More recently, Short faced heartbreaking losses: his wife Nancy Dolman died in 2010 at age 58, and their daughter Katherine tragically died by suicide just a few months ago at age 42. Together, Short and Dolman adopted three children.
Marty, Life is Short will be available globally on Netflix starting May 12. The documentary promises to be a moving and insightful tribute to a man whose humor and heart have touched countless lives. Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to discovering or rediscovering the legacy of Martin Short through this compelling film.
