AceShowbiz - The Magician's Nephew is set to arrive in theaters and IMAX on February 12, 2027, with streaming on Netflix starting April 2. The film will be directed and written by acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig, who previously earned praise for her transformative work on Barbie.
Gerwig has assembled a remarkable ensemble cast for this adaptation, including David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, and Carey Mulligan. The musical score is composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
"I was a child when I first read The Magician's Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life," Gerwig said in a statement. She expressed deep admiration for the story’s imaginative universe and shared that bringing it to life on screen is an incredible honor.
The source material, originally published in 1955, is the sixth book released in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series but depicts the earliest events chronologically. The narrative explores the origins of Narnia, setting the foundation for the beloved story The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, which was first published in 1950.
While previous adaptations of the Narnia series have focused on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe—including a 1988 BBC miniseries and the 2005 feature film starring Tilda Swinton and Liam Neeson—Gerwig’s film will be the first cinematic interpretation of The Magician’s Nephew. Both Disney and Fox have produced sequels based on other Narnia books, but this project marks a new chapter in the franchise’s film history.
Gerwig reflected on how the Chronicles of Narnia influenced her personally, stating, "Because of C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic." She added that the sense of wonder and awe in these stories was transformative and accessible to everyone, including herself.
The film's release in early 2027 is highly anticipated by fans of the beloved fantasy series as well as cinephiles eager to see how Gerwig brings this magical origin story to life with her distinctive vision.
