AceShowbiz - Lionsgate has officially revealed the cast and creative team behind Blumhouse's new reboot of The Blair Witch Project. The project will be directed by Dylan Clark, who is also revising the screenplay initially penned by Chris Devlin. At the forefront of the cast are Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, both reprising their roles from the original 1999 film.
Dylan Clark is best known for his work directing a number of short films such as The Pretty Thing, Seagrass, Behind the Frame, Portrait of God, Storytime, and Catcher. Besides helming the new Blair Witch reboot, Clark is also preparing feature-length adaptations of Portrait of God and Storytime. Notably, the production of Portrait of God involves prominent producers Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele.
Following the release of the original The Blair Witch Project, Joshua Leonard went on to appear in films such as Hatchet, The Shaggy Dog, Prom Night, If I Stay, Scorpion, and the TV series Bates Motel. Meanwhile, Michael C. Williams has credits including Altered, The Objective, and Satanic Hispanics.
The reboot's executive producer team includes the original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale. They are joined by producers James Wan, Jason Blum, Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Steven Schneider, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Alayna Glasthal, Scott O'Brien, and Pavan Kalidindi, all contributing to the project.
The original The Blair Witch Project, released in 1999, achieved remarkable success, grossing $248 million at the box office and securing an 86% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's plot follows a group of student filmmakers who venture into the Appalachian Mountains to document a local legend, only to disappear mysteriously. Alongside Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, the original cast featured Heather Donahue, Bob Griffin, Jim King, Sandra Sánchez, Ed Swanson, Patricia DeCou, Mark Mason, and Susie Gooch.
The franchise expanded with the 2000 sequel Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, which, despite grossing $47 million, was met with critical disappointment, reflected in a 14% Rotten Tomatoes score. A later entry, 2016’s Blair Witch, garnered $45 million and holds a 38% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Beyond films, the Blair Witch Project universe has grown to include books, comics, video games, and immersive experiences such as the Escape Blair Witch escape room, which debuted in Las Vegas in 2021. The franchise has also inspired many studios to produce found footage horror movies.
The reboot was initially reported in 2022, with producers Jason Blum and Roy Lee joining the project two years later. Now, nearly three decades after the original film, key individuals from the initial production—including Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams, Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale—are returning to contribute to the rebooted The Blair Witch Project.
Currently, the project remains in early development stages, and no official release date has been announced for the new The Blair Witch Project. Fans of the franchise can anticipate a fresh take that honors the legacy of the original while introducing new creative perspectives under the Blumhouse banner.
