AceShowbiz - Earlier this year, fans of Smiling Friends faced the end of the animated series as its creators confirmed that the third season would be the final chapter. However, the creative team behind the quirky characters Pim, Charlie, Alan, and Mr. Boss is far from stepping away from animation altogether. In a recent update, co-creator Michael Cusack revealed he is now spearheading a brand new animated project for Netflix.
The upcoming Netflix series, titled Dad's House, introduces audiences to Sean, a thirteen-year-old boy who spends every other weekend with his divorced father, Ian. The show will explore the evolving relationship between father and son as Ian struggles to achieve his own dreams. Although details remain scarce and no trailer or release date has been officially announced, The Hollywood Reporter shared an exclusive image from the series, showcasing an animation style reminiscent of Cusack's earlier work on Adult Swim’s YOLO.
This new series marks a stylistic departure from the aesthetic that made Smiling Friends a cult favorite on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. While Smiling Friends developed a significant following for its offbeat humor and episodic nature, Dad's House appears to take a more narrative-driven approach centered on family dynamics.
Reflecting on the decision to conclude Smiling Friends after three seasons, Cusack candidly shared that both he and co-creator Zach Hadel felt creatively exhausted yet fulfilled by their work on the series. "To be perfectly honest, after we finished season three, Zach and I just both had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this, but also pretty accomplished," Cusack explained. "We just came to this feeling where we're like, 'I think that could just be it after season three.' We both felt like it was right."
Although initially planned for five seasons, Smiling Friends was wrapped up earlier than expected. The series finale cleverly wove together multiple story elements from the previous seasons, providing a satisfying conclusion for fans. Despite ending the series, Cusack and Hadel have not completely ruled out the possibility of revisiting the Smiling Friends universe in the future, should a compelling story present itself.
While Zach Hadel has not publicly announced involvement in any new projects, his animation portfolio remains impressive. Beyond Smiling Friends, Hadel has contributed to well-known series such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Helluva Boss, and Big City Greens, showcasing his versatility within the animation industry.
Fans are encouraged to share their thoughts on these developments and discuss the future of Smiling Friends and Dad's House in the ComicBook Forum, where conversations about animation and streaming projects continue to thrive.
As anticipation builds for Dad's House, Netflix subscribers can look forward to a fresh animated experience shaped by the distinct creative vision of Michael Cusack, whose work has consistently pushed the boundaries of adult animation storytelling.
