The show is a remake of the beloved British series Doc Martin, which originally aired from 2004 to 2022. Starring Josh Charles in the lead role, Best Medicine made its debut in January 2026 and quickly attracted attention for its unique blend of comedy and drama. Fox has ordered a 12-episode second season to air during the 2026-2027 television season, slightly fewer than the 13 episodes featured in the first season.

In a recent statement, Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Network, praised the series as a “breakout” success for the network. He highlighted how Best Medicine balances sharp humor with emotional depth, crediting showrunner Liz Tuccillo for bringing a distinctive creative voice to the project. Thorn expressed excitement about continuing to build on the show’s strong momentum in the upcoming season alongside production partner Propagate.

Liz Tuccillo, known for her work on projects like Sex and the City, Smash, and American Sports Story, serves as the showrunner and executive producer of Best Medicine. She shares executive producing duties with Jamie Babbit, Tyson Bidner, Jaime Eliezer Karas, Mark Crowdy, Philippa Braithwaite, Rodney Ferrell, Howard T. Owens, and Ben Silverman.

The series premiered strongly, benefiting from being scheduled immediately after an NFL doubleheader. It drew an initial live audience of 3.69 million viewers, which increased to 12.6 million when factoring in all viewing platforms. The show also achieved one of the highest-viewed broadcast premieres in the key 18-49 age demographic, proving its appeal among advertisers and audiences alike. Since its debut, Best Medicine has maintained consistent viewership and favorable engagement.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series boasts a 77% approval rating from critics and a 55% score from audiences, reflecting generally positive reception though with some audience reservations.

The storyline follows Josh Charles as Josh Charles Dr. Martin Best, a surgeon who leaves his prestigious Boston practice to become a general practitioner in the coastal town of Port Wenn, Maine. The town is familiar to him from childhood summer visits. The show explores his challenges adjusting to the small-town lifestyle, including his struggle with a blood phobia and efforts to reconnect with his aunt.

Alongside Charles, the cast includes Abigail Spencer, Annie Potts, Josh Segarra, and Cree. A notable guest appearance will be made by Martin Clunes, the original lead of Doc Martin, who will portray Dr. Best’s father in an episode airing March 3.

Josh Charles is widely recognized for his role in The Good Wife, and his extensive career includes appearances in films and TV series such as Dead Poets Society, Muppets from Space, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Sports Night, Masters of Sex, and The Handmaid’s Tale.
