AceShowbiz - To Make Ends Meat is the latest feature from British director-writer Luna Carmoon, starring Naomi Ackie and Alison Oliver. The film has recently completed shooting and will mark Carmoon’s sophomore effort following her acclaimed debut Hoard.
Joining Ackie, known for works like Sorry Baby and Mickey 17, and Oliver, who appeared in Wuthering Heights and Saltburn, are Éanna Hardwicke (Saipan, The Sixth Commandment) and Armande Boulanger (The Returned, Eiffel). The story centers on three women burdened by debts to cruel men, haunted by their pasts and intertwined fates. These women navigate a harsh world where survival is dictated by the brutal languages of consumption and violence.
Goodfellas has acquired international sales rights for To Make Ends Meat and plans to introduce the film at the Cannes Film Festival. Meanwhile, True Brit has secured distribution rights for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
This project is deeply personal for Carmoon, who filmed in her hometown of London. Her debut feature Hoard premiered at Venice Critics’ Week in 2023, winning three awards and earning her a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut in 2025. Carmoon has described To Make Ends Meat as emerging from profound family experiences and memories, reflecting on themes of womanhood, systemic oppression, and inherited trauma.
"This film has come from the belly of my soul, of all things, tar and family," Carmoon explained. "From my grandmother's experiences in Newington Lodge, to my mother Toni and the cleaning houses she took me to where darker things lingered, to teddies and chicken farms. So much of my family and our memories seep deeper than you'd think. I cannot think of a more prevalent time than now to paint and stitch and weave to screen, it is my rage that has fuelled this. The weatherings of being a woman and how you are cannibalised by systems, by men, women and then by debts we sometimes write ourselves into because we believe we deserve it so."
"This has been made with all my blood, figuratively and yes, physically, of all of me. I hope I know it will rupture, splinter and cry to us all when it is stitched together."
To Make Ends Meat reunites Carmoon with producers from her debut: Helen Simmons of Erebus Pictures and Loran Dunn of Delaval Film. Co-producers include Cheri Darbon and Chloe Culpin. Renowned cinematographer Hélène Louvart (La Chimera, Rocks) serves as director of photography.
The film’s financing is supported by a consortium of organizations including BBC Film, BFI (with National Lottery funding), True Brit, Goodfellas, Mother, ProdCo, Arts Alliance, Affine Films, Cofiloisirs, and Blush Film.
Industry publication Screen International was the first to announce the project’s completion. With its powerful themes and talented cast, To Make Ends Meat is positioned to be a significant entry in upcoming international film festivals, beginning with its Cannes launch.
