Steven Caple Jr. is set to helm I Am Legend 2, as confirmed during a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. Caple Jr., known for his work on Creed II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, is now developing the Warner Bros. sequel based loosely on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel.

The original I Am Legend film stars Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville, a virologist and the apparent last human survivor in New York City after a man-made virus devastates humanity and turns most into hostile mutants. The film’s release nearly two decades ago left fans longing for a sequel, and Caple Jr. stepping in has reignited hope for the franchise’s return.

Rumors about Caple Jr.’s involvement first surfaced in 2024, alongside news that Michael B. Jordan would star in the project. Jordan will not portray his son, but rather the leader of a new survivor settlement located in Connecticut. Smith explained that the storyline was initially planned as a prequel before evolving into a sequel based on the alternate ending concept. This shift opens new possibilities for the franchise’s direction and character development.
