AceShowbiz - Josh Hutcherson recently shared insights into why he chooses to stay away from social media, highlighting a specific incident involving backlash over his views on pop icon Taylor Swift.
In a candid interview with GQ, Hutcherson reflected on an experience from last year during the press tour for I Love LA, a film in which he stars as Dylan opposite Rachel Sennott’s Maia. The actor described how a casual comment he made about Taylor Swift sparked a wave of criticism and reminded him of the negative side of being online.
During a playful moment in a video interview with i-D Magazine, Hutcherson and his I Love LA co-star Jordan Firstman engaged in a camera roll roulette game. When a photo appeared showing Hutcherson and his mother in the VIP section at Swift’s Eras Tour concert in New Orleans, he explained, “My mom made me. … I’m not a Swiftie. Very much not. No shade, all respect, but definitely not.”
This honest declaration did not sit well with many Swift fans, who criticized Hutcherson for accepting VIP tickets despite not being a fan of the singer. The backlash was swift and intense, with some accusing him of being dismissive or disrespectful.
Hutcherson recounted the experience to GQ, saying, “I got some heat because I did a photo shoot with Jordan, and Jordan asked me something about being a [Taylor Swift fan], and I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m definitely not a Swiftie.’ All of a sudden it garnered this, ‘Fuck him! He’s a monster! Destroy him! He’s short! He hates her because he’s short!’ [He’s 5ft, 5in.] It’s just like, whoa! I think she’s great. Her music is not my kind of music. That is why I don’t want to be online.”
The actor’s remarks emphasized that while he respects Swift, the type of music she produces simply doesn’t resonate with him. Yet, the volume and tone of the negative reactions left a lasting impression, reinforcing his desire to avoid the social media spotlight when not promoting his projects.
Hutcherson explained that stepping away from social media helps him maintain his focus on real-life moments and protect his mental well-being. “I don’t need that energy,” he said, adding that being a social media star conflicts with his work as an actor. “If people know you more, you can’t disappear into characters. They see you as, ‘Oh, that’s Josh.’ You know what I mean? So, if you’re a fucking meme, people know you for the meme.”
Despite this, Hutcherson acknowledges that he cannot completely escape the digital world. Press tours, engaging with younger co-stars on TikTok, and the resurgence of memes featuring him have all contributed to his increased online presence during the I Love LA promotion. He admitted, “Being thrust out again in the world and online in such a big way, doing a bunch of press and being on TikTok, all those things made me feel very exposed.”
This exposure also brought his personal insecurities back to the forefront. However, through therapy and a shift in mindset, Hutcherson has learned to accept these aspects of himself rather than viewing them as faults. “I started to get a lot of anxiety about it,” he said, “but thanks to therapy and a mindset shift, I’ve learned to cope and accept that these are my genetics.”
He further elaborated, “I no longer look at my insecurities as negatives or as beauty faults, but part of your whole character, your whole existence.” This healthier approach, Hutcherson believes, has helped him manage the pressures of fame and social scrutiny without falling into destructive thought patterns. “I feel like it has led to me being able to handle it in a much more healthy, sane way, and not spiral out and feel like a piece of shit.”
Ultimately, Josh Hutcherson values maintaining his privacy and mental balance over engaging in constant social media interaction. The episode involving Taylor Swift fans served as a stark reminder of the pitfalls of online attention and solidified his preference for disconnecting when possible.
While he embraces his work and the inevitable public attention it brings, Hutcherson continues to prioritize his well-being by limiting his online presence and focusing on his craft away from the digital noise.
