ACOTAR TV adaptation on hold. Sarah J. Maas regains rights, focuses on books. Original showrunner departs. Future uncertain.

AceShowbiz - Fans of Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) series have been awaiting news on the long-anticipated adaptation. Originally announced in 2021 with Ronald D. Moore attached, the project has experienced a prolonged silence.
Ronald D. Moore was initially spearheading the adaptation for Hulu. In July 2024, Moore confirmed his departure from the project after leaving Disney/20th Century and moving to Sony. He stated he no longer knew the show’s status.
During an episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast on March 4, 2026, Maas revealed she has regained the screen rights to all her novels. She explained, “Right now, my focus is on books. It’s been a little while since you guys have had something, so I’m focusing on that.”
With the departure of Moore and Maas’s renewed emphasis on her literary work, the project lacks its original showrunner and a clear production path forward.
Maas also confirmed that the ACOTAR book series continues to progress, with the release of Book 6 scheduled for October 27, 2026, and Book 7 set to follow on January 12, 2027.
The pause in the ACOTAR project contrasts with other series like The Wheel of Time, which remains available on Prime Video. The Wheel of Time, led by showrunner Rafe Judkins, continues to deliver fantasy drama.
In summary, the fate of Hulu’s ACOTAR adaptation remains uncertain after the loss of Ronald D. Moore and the author regaining her screen rights. Fans can anticipate the upcoming books and await fresh announcements about the show’s revival.
