AceShowbiz - Blumhouse Productions has officially announced plans to remake the critically acclaimed 2019 Korean action thriller The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. The original film, written and directed by Lee Won-tae, centers on a unique alliance between a gangster and a police officer as they join forces to track down a serial killer, each motivated by their own reasons to see justice served.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan is set to direct the American adaptation of The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil. The remake will be distributed by Paramount Pictures, marking another significant collaboration between Wan and major studios. Ma Dong-seok, also known as Don Lee, who played the crime boss Jang Dong-soo in the original Korean film, is confirmed to star in the remake, likely reprising an Americanized version of his character.
The production will be a joint effort between Blumhouse and Wan’s Atomic Monster banner, with Michael Clear also producing. Additional production companies involved include Big Punch Global, representing Lee Won-tae, Sylvester Stallone, and D. Matt Geller of Balboa Productions; Chris Lee of B&C Group; and Jang Won-seok, CEO of BA Entertainment. The screenplay is written by Shay Hatten, with Brian Helgeland attached as an executive producer.
Blumhouse initially acquired the remake rights in 2022, but the project is only now moving forward into active development. This film comes amid a busy slate for James Wan, who is also producing the eighth installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise, another Paramount release. The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil will mark Wan’s first major studio project since directing 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the concluding film in the DC Extended Universe Aquaman series.
This remake is a notable addition to Paramount’s expanding portfolio as the studio continues to secure high-profile creative talent following its acquisition moves, including the purchase of Warner Bros. The collaboration with Blumhouse and Wan signals a strategic effort to produce edgy, original action thrillers with broad appeal.
While Ma Dong-seok is confirmed to return in a starring role, details on the rest of the cast remain undisclosed. It is also unclear whether the remake will follow the original’s exact plot and narrative structure or introduce new elements tailored for American audiences. Nevertheless, the source material’s blend of dark, intense action and complex character dynamics aligns well with Wan’s directorial style and Blumhouse’s production ethos.
Fans of the original and thriller enthusiasts can expect a gripping crime story that explores the uneasy partnership between law enforcement and the criminal underworld as they hunt a dangerous serial killer. The film’s tense and violent tone is anticipated to be preserved, maintaining the suspense and originality that made The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil stand out in the Korean cinema landscape.
More updates regarding casting, plot specifics, and production timelines are expected as the project progresses. This remake represents a significant moment for Blumhouse, James Wan, and Paramount, combining their strengths to bring a celebrated international thriller to a wider audience.
