Super Mario Galaxy movie eyes $1 billion after huge debut. Plus, Universal's new romcom You, Me & Tuscany with Regé-Jean Page opens strong.

AceShowbiz - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is making a strong start at the global box office after its $372.5 million worldwide debut. While it may not reach the colossal $1.36 billion mark set by the 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this sequel is well on track to become the first film of 2026 to hit $1 billion and maintain its hold on the No. 1 spot during a box office weekend largely powered by Universal Pictures.
Alongside the second weekend of the Illumination and Nintendo collaboration, Universal is also launching the romantic comedy You, Me & Tuscany, produced by Will Packer. This destination romcom stars Regé-Jean Page and Halle Bailey and is directed by Kat Coiro. It is expected to perform well as a low-budget success, complementing Universal’s other female-driven release, Reminders of Him.
During its first two weekdays following the debut week, Super Mario Galaxy earned $31 million domestically from Monday to Tuesday. This figure is slightly behind the $35.5 million earned by its predecessor during the same timeframe in 2023. Despite this, Super Mario Galaxy is projected to secure an $80 million second weekend, which could enable it to surpass Project Hail Mary as the highest-grossing film of the year by the close of Sunday, if not earlier.
Looking ahead, the next two weekends will see a focus on lower-budget and genre films, with major tentpole releases like Lionsgate/Universal’s Michael and 20th Century’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 scheduled for late April and early May. Smaller films such as Neon’s Japanese video game horror adaptation Exit 8 and IFC’s TikTok-driven reboot of the 1970s mondo horror film Faces of Death will also enter the market.
Universal’s You, Me & Tuscany will open alongside Mario, backed by an estimated $18 million budget and expected to generate $12-15 million in its opening weekend. The film’s Italian setting earned it prominent advertising during the February Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, where stars Page and Bailey were seen supporting Team USA, giving the movie additional visibility.
You, Me & Tuscany fills a niche for theaters seeking a reliable date night option, a category that was more common before the pandemic but is now seen as crucial for reviving box office attendance. While it is unlikely to exceed $50 million in domestic total gross, it joins films like Reminders of Him and The Devil Wears Prada 2 in driving continued interest among female audiences and providing important secondary support to the theatrical market.
With $294 million grossed in its first week, April 2026 is shaping up to be the strongest domestic box office month since the pandemic began. It is on track to surpass the $900 million total recorded in April 2023, which was boosted by The Super Mario Bros. Movie as well as key titles such as John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Thanks to Mario carrying much of the box office load, combined with a solid performance from You, Me & Tuscany, continued earnings from Project Hail Mary, and a projected $55 million opening for Michael on April 24, this month is positioned to exceed last year’s record-setting numbers and continue Universal’s strong theatrical momentum.
