Another significant upcoming release is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which was the first new movie project officially announced in the current slate. This film is directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed and performed motion capture for Sméagol/Gollum in the original and Hobbit trilogies. The return of Ian McKellen as Gandalf is confirmed, and Elijah Wood is all but confirmed to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins. The story unfolds during the 17-year search for Gollum, an event briefly touched upon but not fully explored in Peter Jackson’s Fellowship of the Ring. The hunt also involves Aragorn, though the casting for this character has yet to be announced. This film is scheduled to premiere on December 17, 2027.

The most surprising announcement to date is The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. This film will be co-written by Stephen Colbert, along with Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee, Colbert’s son and a screenwriter. The story is expected to take place roughly 14 years after the events of The Return of the King and will focus on the characters Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Sam’s daughter. Interestingly, much of the narrative will adapt chapters 3 through 8 from Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring that were not included in Peter Jackson’s film version. It appears the movie will blend a post-Return of the King setting with flashbacks to the original Fellowship story. No release date has been announced for this project yet, but it has already generated considerable buzz.
