Disney's live-action Robin Hood remake is canceled. Director confirms the project, based on the beloved 1973 animated fox tale, is officially dead.

AceShowbiz - The long-anticipated live-action remake of Robin Hood from Disney has officially been canceled. The project was based on the 1973 animated film, which portrayed the legendary English outlaw as an anthropomorphic fox. The original film followed Robin Hood and his companion Little John as they stole from the greedy Prince John to aid Nottingham’s oppressed citizens, becoming a treasured part of Disney’s animation legacy.
In a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA), director Carlos López Estrada revealed that the remake is no longer moving forward, effectively shelving the film after several years in development. Estrada stated, “It’s dead, sadly. I say 'sadly' because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it. I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.”
Carlos López Estrada, known for directing Blindspotting and Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, had been attached to direct the remake, with Kari Granlund penning the script and Justin Springer producing. The project was planned as a musical hybrid of live-action and computer-generated imagery (CG), designed to bring back the animated film’s iconic characters for Disney+ viewers.
Set to be a significant addition to Disney’s streaming content, the Robin Hood remake was expected to follow the success of other Disney+ live-action adaptations. However, the project quietly stalled, with no major updates after Estrada’s departure from Disney in 2022. This cancellation mirrors a larger shift in Disney’s strategy, as the company reconsiders its approach to streaming originals and remakes, putting more focus on theatrical releases and carefully selecting projects for Disney+.
Over recent years, several previously announced streaming films have been delayed or scrapped amid this reevaluation. While the 1973 Robin Hood initially received mixed reviews, it eventually became a cult classic and one of the most recognizable versions of the Robin Hood legend. Despite the remake’s cancellation, the story continues to inspire adaptations across film and television, including a Robin Hood series in development at MGM+.
Disney’s shelving of the Robin Hood remake does not mean the story is permanently off their slate. The studio has a history of reviving dormant projects, as seen with the live-action Tangled. That film’s development paused after the underwhelming performance of 2025’s Snow White, but is now back on track with Milo Manheim and Teagan Croft attached as leads. Given Disney’s ongoing interest in reimagining its animated classics, it would not be surprising if the Robin Hood remake is revisited in the future with a new creative team.
Despite this setback, the enduring appeal of Robin Hood ensures that his legend will continue to be retold. Currently, other adaptations are in the works outside Disney’s universe, such as the MGM+ Robin Hood series, promising fresh takes on the tale.
For now, Disney’s planned live-action remake of Robin Hood remains shelved, highlighting how even major studio projects can quietly disappear during development. Meanwhile, the original 1973 animated film remains available to stream on Disney+, continuing to delight fans old and new with its charming characters and memorable music.
