AceShowbiz - Disney has officially announced the production of a live-action remake of the beloved 2010 animated hit, Tangled. This film is a modern reimagining of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale and ranks among Disney’s most cherished contemporary princess stories, alongside Frozen and Encanto. Fans received confirmation about the remake’s progress from none other than Kathryn Hahn, known for her role in Marvel’s Agatha All Along, who is cast as the villainous Mother Gothel. This character is the manipulative figure obsessed with keeping Rapunzel locked away to exploit the magical youth-retaining power of her long hair.
The production is currently underway with director Michael Gracey at the helm, whose previous work includes Hugh Jackman’s musical drama, The Greatest Showman. The confirmed lead cast features Teagan Croft, recognized for her role in DC’s Titans, as Rapunzel, and Milo Manheim from Zombie portraying Flynn Rider, Rapunzel’s charming love interest. Although an official release date has not yet been announced, the assembled cast and crew suggest the film could debut as early as 2027 or within the first half of 2028.
Disney’s foray into live-action remakes has been ongoing for over a decade. The trend began gaining significant momentum in 2010 with Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, which grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. Prior efforts in the late 1990s, such as The Jungle Book (1994) and 101 Dalmatians (1996), laid groundwork but did not fully ignite the live-action remake boom.
During the early 2010s, Disney experimented with a series of re-imaginings that included films like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010), featuring Nic Cage, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent (2014), a fresh perspective on Sleeping Beauty, and Kenneth Branagh’s classic take on Cinderella (2015). However, these films generally produced only modest box office returns relative to their large budgets, which often ranged between $100 million and $200 million.
The turning point came with the release of The Jungle Book in 2016, which utilized cutting-edge visual effects blending live actors with photorealistic CGI, similar to techniques pioneered by James Cameron’s Avatar. This approach led to a series of blockbuster successes including Beauty and the Beast (2017), Aladdin (2019), and The Lion King (2019), each often grossing over a billion dollars globally despite production costs exceeding $200 million.
Despite this golden era, Disney’s live-action remake strategy faced setbacks with titles like Mulan (2020) and Pinocchio (2022), which failed to meet financial expectations. Some projects, such as the 2019 Lady and the Tramp remake, bypassed theaters entirely, debuting directly on Disney+.
The early 2020s were marked by instability within Disney’s leadership, notably the transition from Bob Iger to Bob Chapek, which coincided with the decline in the success of live-action remakes. Iger’s return as CEO in 2023 initiated a course correction aimed at revitalizing this lucrative franchise segment. Recent releases like The Little Mermaid (2023), which earned nearly $600 million, and the Lion King prequel Mufasa (2024), generating over $720 million, signaled a promising comeback. Additionally, the upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake (2025) has already been noted for helping Disney reclaim the billion-dollar box office milestone.
Looking ahead, Tangled is part of Disney’s next wave of live-action remakes, which also includes several highly anticipated titles. Earlier in the pipeline is the live-action version of Moana, scheduled for release on July 10th, 2026, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui. Plans are also underway for a third animated Moana film.
Further upcoming remakes include Guy Ritchie’s take on Hercules, marking his second Disney live-action project following Aladdin. Other projects in development feature a remake of Bambi, a sequel to Lilo & Stitch, a spinoff of Beauty and the Beast centered on the charismatic villain Gaston, and a sequel to Cruella that will serve as a reimagining of the classic 101 Dalmatians.
While the exact release date for the Tangled live-action remake remains unconfirmed, the production’s active status and assembled talent indicate that Disney is fully committed to bringing this modern fairy tale back to the big screen. With the continued success of recent remakes and a robust slate of future projects, Disney’s live-action adaptations are poised to remain a dominant force in global cinema.
