AceShowbiz - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has concluded its first season with a finale that sets the stage for the adventures of Dunk and Egg to continue in 2027. The series has been warmly received by both fans and critics, and notably, it has earned the endorsement of George R.R. Martin, whose relationship with previous Game of Thrones showrunners was notably contentious. As the season wrapped, showrunner Ira Parker shared an early and important request made by Martin before the series went into production.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a six-episode fantasy series adapted from the novellas known as The Tales of Dunk and Egg. The story centers on Peter Claffey’s portrayal of Dunk, a hedge knight, who takes on Dexter Sol Ansell’s character Egg as his squire, unaware that Egg is actually a Targaryen prince. The series adapts the first novella, “The Hedge Knight.” Following the pattern of prior adaptations related to Martin’s work—such as Game of Thrones, derived from A Song of Ice and Fire, and House of the Dragon from Fire & Blood—the show’s title does not use the name of the original book series. Instead, the title A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was chosen after Martin expressed a specific preference regarding the show’s name.
Showrunner Ira Parker revealed in a recent interview that Martin had one clear request: the series should not be called “Dunk & Egg” because it sounded like a sitcom. “Just don't call it 'Dunk & Egg'—it sounds like 'Laverne & Shirley.' It sounds like a sitcom,” Martin reportedly said early in the process. Parker agreed immediately, but as post-production neared completion, he briefly reconsidered, wondering if it might be better to use the simpler, more familiar “Dunk & Egg.” However, his assistant advised against it, and Parker ultimately agreed that sticking with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was the wiser choice.
“It's nice to see a show called 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,' and come there to find out that it is just a little lighter and has some fun, rather than setting people up with 'Dunk & Egg' and you sort of know what you're gonna get,” Parker explained. The showrunner emphasized that making Martin happy was a top priority, and the author remains involved in the production of the series.
Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the journey of Dunk, a hedge knight attending a tournament in Ashford after the passing of his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree (played by Danny Webb). Dunk faces a challenge because he needs a sponsor to vouch for him, but none of the knights or lords present remember his mentor. Throughout the tournament, Dunk forms bonds with other knights and lords and eventually clashes with Aerion Targaryen, portrayed by Finn Bennet. This rivalry culminates in a tense “trial by seven.”
Since its debut, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has garnered critical acclaim. It holds a 93% critics’ score and a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it enjoys an impressive 9/10 rating on IMDb, with Episode 4, titled “Seven,” standing out as the highest-rated episode at 9.6/10. HBO has also confirmed that the show’s viewership has grown steadily week over week, indicating rising popularity.
The series is currently on hiatus but will return with Season 2, which is already in production. The upcoming season will adapt the second novella, “The Sworn Sword,” and is expected to premiere in 2027. All six episodes of the first season are available for streaming on HBO Max.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has successfully expanded the world of Westeros by exploring the earlier adventures of beloved characters Dunk and Egg. With the direct involvement and approval of George R.R. Martin, the show has maintained a strong connection to its literary origins while appealing to both longtime fans and new viewers. The thoughtful choice of the series title reflects the balance the creators sought between honoring the source material and establishing a distinct identity for the show.
As fans eagerly await the next installment, the show’s blend of drama, fantasy, and adventure continues to captivate audiences. The collaboration between Martin and the creative team ensures that the story remains faithful to the spirit of the original novellas while embracing the possibilities of television storytelling.
