AceShowbiz - Illenium has deep roots in Las Vegas, marked by historic performances and innovative productions. On Thursday, March 5, he launched the first of nine shows for his residency titled Odyssey at the Sphere, a venue renowned for its technological advancements and immersive environment.
Following his milestone in July 2021 as the first artist to headline Allegiant Stadium with his three-set event Trilogy, Illenium once again pushed the envelope. The Sphere’s cutting-edge design allowed the producer to craft an experience reminiscent of a fusion between Blade Runner and Final Fantasy, seamlessly integrating music and visuals for a fully immersive show.
In a unique move not previously attempted by any artist since the Sphere’s opening nearly three years ago, Illenium created an entire album specifically for this residency. Released on February 6 by Republic Records, the album Odyssey was performed live in its entirety for the first time, accompanied by synchronized cinematic visuals displayed on the Sphere’s massive wraparound screen. This fusion of sound and imagery transformed opening night into a landmark moment in live entertainment.
“We were like, ‘We want to make a movie,’” said Nick Miller, better known as Illenium, describing his vision for the residency. He emphasized the opportunity to combine an immersive show with a compelling narrative, aiming for a captivating emotional journey that engages the audience fully.
The show featured a carefully crafted 90-minute set, starting precisely at 10:45 p.m. and concluding at 12:15 a.m., guiding nearly 20,000 attendees through a 40-track saga divided into eight chapters. Central to the performance was the transformation of Illenium’s iconic phoenix mascot, which forms the “N” in his logo, symbolizing rebirth and the emotional highs and lows that have shaped his career.
One of the most historic aspects of the night was the debut of the new album within the residency’s framework. All 19 tracks from Odyssey were woven into the setlist, blending seamlessly with selections from Illenium’s previous albums such as Ashes, Awake, Ascend, and Fallen Embers, as well as unreleased songs. Rather than simply playing the album straight through, the songs were integrated into a narrative structure that felt like new chapters continuing an ongoing story.
Opening night at the Sphere was a testament to Illenium’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of live music production. By melding music, storytelling, and state-of-the-art visuals, Illenium set a new standard for immersive concert experiences, further solidifying his monumental relationship with Las Vegas and its most iconic venues.
