AceShowbiz - Timothée Chalamet took an extraordinary approach to portray the nearsighted character Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme. To authentically capture Marty’s myopia, Chalamet wore specialized contact lenses that deliberately impaired his vision, creating a realistic experience of poor eyesight rather than relying solely on costume glasses.
According to optometrist Dr. Mitchell Cassel, the goal was to produce glasses that looked genuinely thick and conveyed the narrow, myopic eyes Marty would have. "Timothée wanted the glasses to feel earned rather than costume," Cassel explained, emphasizing the effort to create a believable effect. This meant that the lenses not only looked heavy but also made the actor truly experience the visual limitations of nearsightedness.
The film’s director, Josh Safdie, detailed the process in a December interview with Variety. The actor was fitted with +10 contact lenses to blur his vision, then wore -10 prescription glasses over them, effectively canceling out the contacts’ effect when the glasses were on. However, when the glasses slipped off, Chalamet was left nearly blind. Safdie described the sensation as "like being in a fishbowl," highlighting the physical challenge of the setup.
Chalamet embraced the demanding method with a strong commitment to his craft, stating, "I'll do anything you ask me to do." This intense preparation aims to add depth and authenticity to his portrayal of Marty. Whether this devotion will resonate with audiences and critics alike remains to be seen when Marty Supreme premieres and the Oscars 2026 race heats up.
The combination of innovative eyewear and immersive acting demonstrates the lengths Chalamet is willing to go to fully inhabit his roles, pushing boundaries to enhance realism in cinema.
