AceShowbiz - Timothée Chalamet's acclaimed A24 film Marty Supreme is set for its streaming debut on HBO Max, with the platform announcing an April 24 release date. The film first premiered in theaters on December 25 and has since attracted considerable attention during awards season.
The sports drama, directed by Josh Safdie, stars Timothée Chalamet alongside an ensemble cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler Okonma (also known as Tyler, the Creator), Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, Luke Manley, and Koto Kawaguchi. Set in 1950s New York City, the story follows Marty Mauser, portrayed by Chalamet, an ambitious table tennis player determined to become a world champion at any cost.
The screenplay was co-written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein, with production credits shared by Chalamet, Safdie, Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas. Marty Supreme garnered nine Academy Award nominations, including best picture, best actor for Chalamet, best director for Safdie, and best screenplay for the writing duo. While Chalamet secured a Golden Globe Award for his leading role, the film did not receive any Oscars during the ceremony.
Throughout the awards campaign, Chalamet's remarks sparked debate, notably when he expressed reluctance to engage with art forms that he felt "no one cares about," citing ballet and opera as examples. These comments were referenced several times during the Oscar telecast.
In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, chief film critic David Rooney praised Marty Supreme as "a kinetic portrait of a life in perpetual motion," underlining the film’s dynamic storytelling and energetic direction.
As the film shifts into its streaming phase, audiences will soon have the opportunity to experience Chalamet's compelling performance and Safdie's vision from the comfort of their homes starting April 24 on HBO Max.
