There's no drama,” Grimes explained. He emphasized that the story needed conflict to push Kayce’s journey forward. “Something's gonna have to happen that gets in the way of him having that,” he said. “Otherwise, why is he gonna take a badge? The last time we saw him, he was throwing a badge in a field. Is he gonna go pick it up?”

Hudnut, the showrunner for Marshals, elaborated on the significance of Monica’s death, highlighting its connection to real-world issues. He shared with EW that Monica’s cancer was caused by toxins dumped on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, a storyline meant to honor the character while spotlighting environmental challenges faced by reservations. “She passed, which is why Tate wanted to go to the rally, which is why Kayce goes to the rally. And so she really is guiding his journey,” Hudnut said. “Her presence and spirit will remain throughout this series. She’s such a huge part of who Kayce Dutton is that she will be with him along the way.”

Grimes admitted that the news of Monica’s death initially surprised him. “I was not at all expecting that when I got the call that that’s their idea,” he told EW. He shared his personal connection to Asbille, calling her “one of my really good friends and the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with.” He expressed how difficult it was to imagine the show without her character, saying, “Kayce and Monica are the same thing. They’re one.” Despite his initial disappointment, Grimes acknowledged the depth and potential of the storyline that emerged from this plot development.
