AceShowbiz - Scream 7 has finally arrived, continuing the iconic horror franchise that began with the 1996 Wes Craven-directed classic. This time, the chilling events unfold in Pine Grove, Indiana, where fan-favorite survivor Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) lives a seemingly peaceful life. Now married to Joel McHale’s character Mark, she is raising a strong-willed teenage daughter named Tatum, portrayed by Isabel May. However, their calm existence is shattered when a new wave of brutal murders forces mother and daughter to confront a fresh menace — or rather, multiple masked killers.
The film also brings back Courteney Cox as the relentless and now independent reporter Gale Weathers, alongside Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, who reprise their roles as Randy Meeks’ niece and nephew. Fans can also expect some unexpected surprises woven throughout the plot.
As with every installment in the Scream universe, the central mystery revolves around the identity of the Ghostface killer and the motivations behind the killings. This franchise is known for its meta-commentary on horror tropes and the psychology behind serial murder, making the killer’s rationale as intriguing as the body count.
Who is Ghostface in Scream 7?
This time, the story complicates matters by introducing not one but three Ghostface killers.
Early in the film, one Ghostface terrorizes Sidney, Tatum, and the residents of Pine Grove. In a tense sequence, the killer invades Sidney’s home, stabbing her with a fire poker and attacking her husband Mark. The tension escalates when the killer chases them outside, only to be struck by Gale in an SUV along with Mindy and Chad. Upon unmasking, the attacker is revealed to be a man Sidney had briefly noticed at her coffee shop earlier in the film — an escaped mental patient from a nearby institution.
Gale and Sidney visit the institution, where an orderly named Marco (played by Ethan Embry) informs them about a John Doe resembling Stu Macher, a character from the original movie played by Matthew Lillard. This element introduces a surreal and eerie thread: a digitally recreated, scarred Stu appears via deepfake technology to taunt the survivors, highlighting the film’s modern angle on the dangers of artificial intelligence and digital manipulation.
Before the climactic reveal, the movie features a brief montage of familiar faces appearing on a computer screen — including Nancy Loomis (Laurie Metcalf), Roman Bridger (Scott Foley), and Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Notably, although there were rumors, Skeet Ulrich does not return in any form in this installment.
Are there more Ghostface killers?
Yes, there are two additional killers who play crucial roles in the finale.
In the movie’s climax, the Ghostface duo kidnaps Tatum and binds her to a chair in Sidney’s backyard, echoing the harrowing capture of Steve (Drew Barrymore’s boyfriend) from the first Scream. The identities of these killers are eventually exposed: one is the institution’s unstable orderly Marco, who taunts a man killed earlier while trying to protect Sidney’s family. The other is Jessica Bowden, portrayed by Anna Camp, Sidney’s seemingly friendly next-door neighbor and mother of Lucas, one of Tatum’s classmates obsessed with the Woodsboro murders and their media coverage.
Jessica reveals a dark backstory — once a fan of Sidney and inspired by her book, she killed her abusive husband and escaped justice. Feeling abandoned when Sidney retreated from public life and was not involved in the New York attacks depicted in the previous film (Scream VI), Jessica felt betrayed and sought revenge. After a stint in a mental institution, she teamed up with Marco to execute their sinister plan. Jessica’s ultimate goal is to kill Sidney and Mark and raise Tatum as her own child.
What happens in the final confrontation?
Sidney quickly shoots Marco in the head, taking him down with decisive force. Jessica escapes with Tatum into the family home’s unfinished garage — an unusually prolonged setting for a tense showdown. After a brutal struggle, Sidney and Tatum manage to shoot Jessica multiple times in the head, finally ending the threat. A recurring motif in the film is that a killer only dies when shot in the head, so the characters ensure Jessica is thoroughly dispatched.
With the killers defeated, the film closes on the family poised to reclaim their lives, though the legacy of violence and trauma remains a constant shadow in the Scream universe.
Scream 7 blends classic slasher thrills with contemporary themes like AI dangers and explores complex new characters, delivering a fresh yet faithful chapter to the beloved horror saga. The return of iconic cast members alongside new faces and the revelation of multiple killers make this installment a must-watch for fans eager to unravel the latest Ghostface mystery.
