AceShowbiz - Shia LaBeouf has been mandated to enter rehabilitation, participate in a drug testing program, and post a $100,000 bond as part of the conditions for his release following a drunken bar fight during Mardi Gras earlier this month.
The New Orleans Criminal District Court Judge Simone Levine revoked the actor’s initial release on his own recognizance and imposed the substantial bond on Thursday, according to reports from NOLA.com.
The 39-year-old actor appeared in a crowded courtroom alongside his attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, and promptly paid the $100,000 bond after the hearing concluded. He was seen wearing a white jacket, blue jeans, and cowboy boots.
Shia LaBeouf was ordered to complete a rehabilitation program, comply with regular drug and alcohol testing, and maintain distance from both the alleged victims and the bar where the incident occurred during Mardi Gras in the French Quarter.
Judge Levine expressed her primary concern was the potential danger LaBeouf posed not only to the alleged victims but also to the wider marginalized community in New Orleans, which she noted has endured significant hardship and “terror.”
Prior to the hearing, the judge mandated a drug and alcohol test for LaBeouf, citing substantial evidence connected to his case since his initial release from custody on February 17.
According to court sources, the drug test revealed the actor had been taking a prescription medication, which could account for one of the substances detected in his system. However, the judge highlighted that her main worry was his alcohol use, noting that she believed LaBeouf was not taking it seriously, as evidenced by his continued partying after his arrest.
In contrast, LaBeouf’s lawyer argued there were no illegal substances found in his client’s system, asserting that the drug test results reflected only past alcohol use and no illicit drug consumption.
Chervinsky further contended that intoxication during Mardi Gras is not illegal, defending the actor’s state at the time of the incident.
Additionally, LaBeouf requested permission to travel outside New Orleans, but this motion was denied by the court, according to WDSU.
The prosecution requested a stay-away order to prevent LaBeouf from returning to the bar involved in the altercation and from contacting the alleged victims.
There was no immediate comment from LaBeouf’s representatives following the release of these developments.
The incident that led to these legal proceedings began with LaBeouf’s arrest on February 17, when he was charged with two counts of simple battery after allegedly assaulting two men outside a dive bar during Mardi Gras festivities.
Video footage from the incident showed the actor headbutting one alleged victim, being punched by a group of men in another clip, and reportedly shouting homophobic slurs at the alleged victims in a separate segment.
Although initially released without a bond, Judge Levine explained that the allegations of homophobic slurs had not yet been formally included in the court record at that time.
During the hearing, a witness expressed hope that the actor would take steps to support the LGBTQ community, which the witness said was severely harmed by his actions.
The same witness shared that they sat next to LaBeouf in court and observed the actor praying and appearing visibly upset by the court’s ruling. The witness described seeing him cross himself multiple times and noted he seemed nervous.
LaBeouf is scheduled to return to court on March 19 for his next hearing.
