Last year’s festival made headlines after Lauryn Hill performed at approximately 2:30 a.m. to a nearly empty stadium due to delays that persisted throughout the day. Festival organizers accepted responsibility for the late start and defended Hill’s performance in a statement.
Essence Festival emphasized their support for Lauryn Hill, stating, "Family is family and around here we protect our own no matter what the people have to say.... Let's be very clear- We don't play about Ms. Lauryn Hill. Not for clicks. Not for headlines." They confirmed that Hill arrived on time and delivered a legendary performance, adding that the delay was not her fault.
The festival described the moment as unforgettable and praised Lauryn Hill’s unmatched legacy, reinforcing their commitment to honoring the artists who perform on their stage.
