AceShowbiz - Bridgerton has returned with fresh episodes, concluding the fairy tale romance between Sophie (Yerin Ha) and Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) while also focusing on Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and her evolving journey through marriage and loss.
In Season 4, Part 1, viewers see Francesca and her new husband, John Stirling (Victor Alli), coming back from their honeymoon alongside her sister Eloise (Claudia Jessie). Their relationship appears strong initially, but Francesca begins to worry about difficulties conceiving. She suspects her inability to become pregnant is linked to not experiencing a “pinnacle” during intimacy, sparking a series of candid, sometimes humorous conversations as she seeks to understand what that means from the women around her.
Speaking to DECIDER, Hannah Dodd shared insight into her character’s emotional state, explaining, “All of that pressure, when you add wanting to get pregnant onto it as well, like it’s a lot. And I think she’s so up in her head, just as a character.” This highlights how Francesca’s internal struggles intertwine with her new life as a married woman.
Season 4, Part 2 introduces major changes for Francesca that may differ from Julia Quinn’s original novels. One of the pivotal moments is the death of John Stirling, which occurs in Episode 6. After excusing himself for a nap, John tragically dies in his sleep, leaving Francesca a widow just before Season 5 begins. Before his death, John had complained about a headache but seemed fine moments earlier while working on a puzzle with Francesca and Michaela (Masali Baduza).
Victor Alli revealed to People that he was informed of John’s fate during his chemistry read with Dodd. He described the role as a “nice journey and a nice character arc,” expressing excitement about joining the story and the ton.
Following John’s death, Francesca surprises her family with how composed she remains despite her grief. In a tender scene with Eloise and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan), she explains that her calm demeanor stems from believing she is pregnant. This hope provides some emotional stability amid her sorrow.
However, this belief is challenged when Mr. Dundas arrives to perform an examination to confirm if Francesca is carrying the next heir of the Kilmartin line. The test reveals that she is not pregnant, which devastates Francesca and pushes her into deeper grief.
The future focus of Bridgerton Season 5 remains uncertain, particularly regarding which Bridgerton sister will take center stage. Showrunner Jess Brownell has confirmed that both Francesca and Eloise will have their moments in upcoming seasons. However, fans will learn the identity of Season 5’s lead soon, as Brownell explained, “We want to give fans a moment to really celebrate Yerin and Luke and everything they’ve put into this season, but we are starting production very soon on Season 5 and we tend to make an announcement close to the start of production about who the new leads are.”
For now, viewers can catch Bridgerton Season 4, Part 2 streaming exclusively on Netflix, where the drama continues to unfold, exploring themes of love, loss, and resilience through Francesca’s poignant storyline.
