AceShowbiz - Hilary Duff is revealing deeply personal stories in her new album Luck … or Something, exploring themes from motherhood to complicated family relationships and a past “inappropriate” age-gap romance.
In a candid interview with Glamour, the singer and actress shared why she chose to be so vulnerable in this latest project. “I just felt really ready to share,” Hilary Duff explained. “I wanted to make something that I could connect with people again on the level of who I am now. I felt like people have definitely gone through some of the similar large strokes that I have in the past 10 to 15 years.”
The album covers a broad emotional spectrum, including songs like “We Don’t Talk,” which hints at a rumored dispute with her sister Haylie Duff, and “The Optimist,” where Hilary Duff expresses longing for her father’s love. “That’s my family,” she said. “Those are the people that affect you the most, take up the most space naturally as a human who’s born into something.”
Hilary also reflected on the complexities of family life, emphasizing that being born into a family doesn’t guarantee unity. “You can only control your side and your street … I’ve had a very complicated life, and my parents had a very complicated thing,” she admitted.
Details about the Duff family’s challenges have occasionally surfaced. Her father, Robert Duff, publicly acknowledged an affair during his marriage to Hilary’s mother, Susan. During their divorce proceedings in 2008, Robert reportedly spent a day in jail for allegedly selling family assets without court approval.
The sibling relationship between Hilary and Haylie has also been under media scrutiny. Rumors of a feud escalated amid speculation that Hilary was involved in a “toxic” mom group drama referenced by fellow Disney star Ashley Tisdale. Hilary’s husband, Matthew Koma, responded to Tisdale’s essay with a mocking post, which was followed by Haylie sharing photos of time spent with Tisdale and her children.
Although Hilary Duff didn’t directly address the mom group controversy, she expressed gratitude for the supportive circle of women she has found since becoming a mother. She has four children: 13-year-old son Luca with her ex-husband Mike Comrie, and 7-year-old Banks, 4-year-old Mae, and 1-year-old Townes with Koma.
“I feel exceedingly lucky that my kids happen to spend their time with amazing women who lift each other up,” Hilary said, highlighting the positive influence of her close friends and community.
With Luck … or Something, Hilary Duff is not only sharing her personal journey but also inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences with family, love, and growth.
