Describing the shoot as akin to a major film production, Norton remarked, “It was like a movie shoot, a massive, massive deal.” The video was filmed at the Whitgift shopping centre in Croydon, south London, towards the end of 2025. “Everyone was lovely on set; it was a really, really fun experience,” he added, highlighting the positive atmosphere during filming.
The star-studded video features appearances from actors Domhnall Gleeson, Cillian Murphy, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith, along with singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi. It acts as a nod to an appearance on The Graham Norton Show from October, where Swift and the “Opalite” cast were present. During that episode, Gleeson expressed a wish to be part of a Swift music video, which seems to have inspired the collaboration.
In a post on Instagram, Swift praised Norton, calling him “insanely charismatic and lovable.” Reflecting on the October show, she said, “I remember thinking I got ridiculously lucky with the group I was paired with … I was instantly struck with an idea.” The music video, which boasts a retro 90s aesthetic, was both penned and directed by Swift.
Norton explained how the concept came to Swift suddenly while she was on the sofa during their show. “The next thing you know, she’s written this whole treatment,” he said. “Taylor is a marvelous director. Her ability to not get stressed is extraordinary.”
The video made its exclusive debut on Spotify and Apple Music on Friday, February 6, with a broader release on YouTube following over the weekend. This release comes four months after Swift launched her album The Life of a Showgirl, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, remaining at the top for twelve weeks. In the U.K., this album marked her 14th No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.
According to midweek reports from the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published on Sunday, February 8, “Opalite” is poised to become Swift’s eighth No. 1 single in the U.K. If it reaches the top, it will be a significant milestone, marking the first time any of her albums has produced two U.K. No. 1 hits. The lead single from The Life of a Showgirl, titled “The Fate of Ophelia,” previously spent seven non-consecutive weeks at the top of the chart in 2025.
