AceShowbiz - Mýa is making a triumphant return with the announcement of her new album, Retrospect, after an eight-year gap since her last studio release. The D.C.-born R&B sensation captivated audiences during her performance at the 2025 BET Awards, and she is now poised to maintain that excitement with her upcoming project.
On February 2, Mýa revealed details about Retrospect during her appearance on Sherri Shepherd's daytime talk show. This highly anticipated album marks her tenth studio release and features collaborations with notable artists such as 21 Savage and Joyner Lucas. Set to drop this spring through her independent label, Planet 9, in partnership with Virgin Music, Retrospect will be her first full-length album since 2018’s T.K.O. (The Knock Out).
Mýa expressed her deep connection to music, stating, “Music wasn’t just a part of my life; it was the heartbeat of my home, the foundation of my joy.” She elaborated that Retrospect is a celebration of that passion and represents “the kind of funk that never fades.” The album aims to create a bridge between her musical past and future, paying homage to her inspirations while also forging new paths.
To launch the album campaign, Mýa released the lead single, “ASAP,” on January 30. The track, characterized by a sultry, ’80s-inspired midtempo groove, showcases Mýa's signature style as she sings about a love that is undeniably worth fighting for. Co-produced by LaMar “MyGuyMars” Edwards and Mýa, “ASAP” offers a glimpse into a project that began its journey in 2016, drawing influence from the funk and soul of the ’70s and ’80s.
In addition to her new music, Mýa celebrated the 25th anniversary of her sophomore album, Fear of Flying, in 2025. She marked this milestone with a vinyl reissue and a Dolby Atmos streaming release of the album that includes her iconic Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit, “Case of the Ex.” Last fall, she also electrified audiences during select dates of Brandy and Monica’s The Boy Is Mine Tour.
Throughout her career, Mýa has achieved significant milestones, including three top 10 hits on the Hot 100: “It’s All About Me” (1998) featuring Sisqo, “Case of the Ex” (2000), and the classic “Lady Marmalade” (2001) alongside Christina Aguilera, P!nk, and Lil’ Kim. Notably, her 2003 album Moodring reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, while T.K.O. peaked at No. 41 on the Independent Albums chart.
As Mýa gears up for this exciting new chapter in her music career, fans can look forward to what promises to be an exhilarating release.
