In his new capacity, Luis Fernández will be at the forefront of implementing robust creative and commercial strategies designed to further solidify Universal Music Spain’s position in the industry. A primary focus will be on strengthening the company’s already impressive artist roster, actively attracting and developing new talent, and significantly expanding their international reach and global footprint, according to an official press release.
Based in Madrid, Luis Fernández will report directly to Jesús López, the esteemed Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. López expressed strong confidence in the appointment, stating, “Luis Fernández’s appointment as president of Universal Music Spain reflects his strategic vision, deep understanding of the music business, and his ability to lead teams with a strong focus on artist service.” He further lauded Fernández's entrepreneurial mindset and modern, holistic approach as key drivers of growth and innovation.
Upon his appointment, Luis Fernández shared his enthusiasm, remarking, “I am honored to lead the wonderful team at Universal Music Spain, who have fully embraced our vision for generating new creative, commercial and global opportunities in support of our artists.” He also reflected on his personal journey with the company, noting his professional beginnings as an intern in the marketing department, and extended gratitude to Jesús López for his trust, and especially to Alicia Arauzo, who provided his first professional role and remained a steadfast mentor.
Fernández's career trajectory within Universal Music has been marked by steady ascent and diverse experience. He initially joined Universal Music Spain in 2023 as an artistic director within the A&R department. Subsequently, he served as director of artist management at GTS (Global Talent Services), overseeing UMG’s artist management division in Spain. Most recently, he held the position of co-managing director of Universal Music Spain alongside Alicia Arauzo, who recently announced her retirement after a distinguished 30-year tenure with the company.
Prior to his impactful roles at Universal Music Spain, Luis Fernández demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit as the CEO of Sonido Muchacho. He founded this independent management, record label, and music publishing company in 2014, cultivating a reputation for identifying and nurturing emerging talent within the vibrant Spanish music scene. His proven track record and comprehensive industry knowledge position him uniquely to lead Universal Music Spain into its next chapter of success and innovation.
