AceShowbiz - Washington, D.C.'s vibrant music scene is poised for the return of Liberation Weekend, marking its highly anticipated second iteration. From April 24 to 26, the iconic Black Cat will host a powerful festival dedicated to supporting trans liberation and mutual aid. This year's impressive lineup features punk rock legend Laura Jane Grace, the dynamic Ekko Astral and friends, and the acclaimed Illuminati Hotties, performing their special "Free I.H." set.
Beyond the headliners, the festival promises a diverse array of talent. The initial wave includes indie darlings Ezra Furman, the energetic Pool Kids, and the raw power of Pissed Jeans. The bill also features Pretty Bitter, Bambara, Ragana, Pinky Lemon, Snowing, Gladie, Spring Silver, Thisdogllhunt, Eevie Echoes & the Locations, Mx Lonely, and Adult Human Females. Nightly afterparties will enliven Transmission, with lineups to be announced. Notably, this festival will mark Ekko Astral drummer Miri Tyler's final performance with the band.
Liberation Weekend was originally launched in 2025 by Ekko Astral in collaboration with the Gender Liberation Movement. This grassroots collective actively advocates for trans people's fundamental rights to bodily autonomy and self-determination nationwide. The festival serves as a vital platform, blending powerful music with a critical social mission to foster community and raise essential funds for trans-led initiatives.
More than just a music festival, Liberation Weekend embodies the spirit of DIY punk, channeling its rebellious energy into a movement for justice and equity. By uniting a diverse roster of artists and passionate activists, the event at Black Cat continues to amplify voices, challenge norms, and build solidarity. It stands as a testament to music's power to drive meaningful change and support the ongoing fight for trans rights.
