AceShowbiz - As fans of Billy Bob Thornton await the next season of his popular series Landman, there’s exciting news for those who appreciate his earlier work. Long before he navigated the complexities of the Texas oil industry, Billy Bob Thornton starred in the 2005 remake of the beloved sports comedy, Bad News Bears. This film, directed by the acclaimed Richard Linklater, follows the story of Morris Buttermaker, a former professional baseball player whose struggles with alcoholism and relationships lead him to coach a hapless little league team. As he works with these underdogs, he gradually transforms them into a competitive force.
Now, more than two decades since its theatrical debut, Bad News Bears is set to make its way to a new streaming platform. Beginning February 1, fans can catch the comedy on Paramount+. Previously available on Prime Video and Hoopla, this transition marks a fresh opportunity for viewers to revisit the film. The cast features notable performances from Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear, Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, and young talent Sammi Kane Kraft. Despite its star-studded lineup, the film received mixed reviews upon release, achieving a mere 48% "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Thornton’s performance, which some critics compared to his acclaimed role in Bad Santa, was, however, a standout.
At the box office, Bad News Bears struggled to find its footing, earning only $34.3 million against its $35 million budget. Audience reception was similarly lukewarm, with a score of 46%. Nevertheless, over the years, the film has garnered a cult following, much like many of Linklater’s works, largely due to its frequent airings on television.
Interestingly, the film’s narrative seems to have inspired real-life events; a little league team in Los Angeles found themselves in a financial bind but received a boost from an unexpected donor—a local strip club. This bizarre twist mirrors the movie’s themes of perseverance and community support.
The arrival of Bad News Bears on Paramount+ coincides perfectly with the conclusion of Landman season 2, which recently set a record for the largest audience for an original series finale on the platform. While the reception for the second season was divisive, it has nonetheless been renewed for a third season. Fans can look forward to more of Billy Bob Thornton in the future, but in the meantime, they can enjoy the nostalgic charm of Bad News Bears on its new streaming home.
