AceShowbiz - As excitement builds for Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, series creator Rick Riordan expresses strong confidence regarding potential deviations from his original book series. Unlike past adaptations, Rick Riordan and the show's writing team anticipate minimal fan backlash from any narrative adjustments.
The early 2010s film adaptations, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, drew criticism for significant changes. Notably, the first film cast Logan Lerman, then 17, as a 12-year-old Percy. The Disney+ series, conversely, features Walker Scobell, 14 at its 2023 premiere, aligning with the character's book age and addressing a major past grievance.
Throughout its inaugural season, the Disney+ version of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, with Rick Riordan as executive producer, has largely remained faithful. Riordan told The Radio Times, "I think we were fairly confident that most of the tweaks that we had done [for the series] would be well received." He highlighted the team's unified approach: "I think everyone on the team is very mindful of the legacy of the books and the audience and what they're expecting." While not feeling imprisoned, he notes a strong obligation toward the material, ensuring the team's shared vision. He notes that adapting stories across media necessitates changes.
The two Percy Jackson films garnered mixed reviews; 2013’s Sea of Monsters failed to secure a third movie. In stark contrast, the Disney+ series has achieved remarkable success, setting new viewership records. This positive reception, combined with the creative team's deep respect for the source material, provides Rick Riordan and his colleagues the assurance to make thoughtful choices for Season 2, confident in honoring the saga while adapting it effectively.
