AceShowbiz - The world of cinema has been home to some incredible villains throughout history, but the best comes from an unexpected source. The most memorable villains of the past 10 years include superhero antagonists, serial killers, and demonic entities, among others. However, the best incarnation of a movie villain in recent memory is actually one from a DreamWorks Animation sequel that was way better than expected. The DreamWorks Animation movie with the best modern villain is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish far exceeded expectations in almost every aspect, with one of its standout features being the Wolf antagonist. Puss begins to get stalked by the character early on and shows a level of fear that we've never seen from him. Everything about the Wolf, from the now-iconic whistle that signals his arrival, to the theming around the character as a whole, to each interaction with Puss, all make for something truly special. The Wolf is voiced by Wagner Moura, who brings a level of depth and menace to the character.
Pitting an iteration of Death against Puss's nine lives is a brilliant move. At first, we simply see the Wolf as a threat to Puss in terms of his sheer size, his voice, and the weapons he carries. However, what makes him great is that the Wolf is actually also Death. The idea that Death works as something of a bounty hunter works well to set him up against Puss, yet it expertly plays into the overall story. Puss has lived a reckless life, believing himself to be basically invincible, thanks in large part to the nine lives he has as a cat.
The movie almost immediately deals with this, revealing that Puss has used up eight of his nine lives. That makes Puss fear death and face it in a way he's never had to before. The dynamic between Puss and the Wolf is expertly crafted, with the Wolf serving as a constant reminder of Puss's own mortality. The DreamWorks Animation team has outdone themselves with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, creating a villain that will be remembered for years to come.
