This potential collaboration comes six years after their last project together, the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep. Speaking at The Haunting Vision of Mike Flanagan & Kate Siegel panel at Motor City Comic Con, Flanagan shared insights into his ongoing efforts to work with Ferguson again, highlighting her incredibly busy schedule since their 2019 collaboration.

During the panel, Flanagan recounted his frequent contact with Rebecca Ferguson, despite her packed calendar. He noted, "She's been busy with a little indie project called Dune, and she's on season 3 of Silo right now. She still finds the time to do, like, one of the biggest movies on Netflix right now. She's prolific, but we're in constant contact." He revealed his consistent attempts to cast her: "Once, every couple of months, I hear from Rebecca just saying, 'Hey, what's going on?' And I'll say, 'Hey! Would you like to come do this part? I'd love to talk to you about this thing.'" Flanagan remains optimistic, adding, "She's always booked, but one of these days, it'll work out for sure. I can't give away the name of the character, but when I first got The Exorcist, she was one of my first phone calls."

Their previous collaboration, Doctor Sleep, served as a sequel to The Shining, starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson. Ferguson delivered a memorable performance as the film's antagonist, Rose the Hat, a powerful immortal who preys on children possessing psychic abilities.
