Alien: Romulus 2 is official! Ãlvarez writes, new director. Rain & Andy return. But a frustrating Alien franchise lore problem remains unresolved.

AceShowbiz - The Alien saga is set for a thrilling continuation with the highly anticipated sequel, Alien: Romulus 2. Following the critical and commercial success of Alien: Romulus, which revitalized the iconic sci-fi horror franchise, a follow-up was inevitable. Fede Ãlvarez, director of the 2024 hit, is scripting Alien: Romulus 2, though he will pass directorial duties to an as-yet-unnamed replacement. Indications suggest the sequel will continue its predecessor's story, especially since Cailee Spaeny's Rain and David Jonsson's Andy survived Alien: Romulus' brutal ending. While this continuation of popular characters is encouraging, it unfortunately leaves a significant, frustratingly unresolved issue within the broader franchise lore.
This lingering problem stems from Ridley Scott's ambitious return to the Alien universe with Prometheus and its sequel, Alien: Covenant. These prequels were, to say the least, unconventional. Prometheus notably stepped away from the typical Alien formula, exploring philosophical themes with subtle connections to existing lore. While Alien: Covenant restored some familiar tropes, it deepened the enigmatic mysteries Scott had introduced. Initially, these films received a divisive response, unlike the immediate positive reception for Alien: Romulus. However, time has been kind; rewatches have allowed many to appreciate both Prometheus and Alien: Covenant for Scott's intended vision, rather than expecting a conventional Alien movie.
Despite this growing appreciation, Ridley Scott's full intentions for his prequel narrative remain tantalizingly unclear. The ending of Alien: Covenant left a multitude of profound questions unanswered. Foremost among these are the Engineers – the enigmatic race responsible for human life on Earth, who then inexplicably sought our annihilation. Audiences still wonder: What truly drives their actions? What are their origins? What is their fundamental connection to the xenomorphs? And why was humanity destined for eradication? While some theories exist – perhaps the Engineers grew disillusioned with human violence – these pivotal plot threads continue to dangle, demanding definitive closure for the franchise's overarching mythology.
For the Alien franchise to achieve a cohesive and satisfying narrative arc, these profound questions from Scott's prequels require resolution. While Alien: Romulus 2 is charting its own course, focusing on the immediate aftermath of Romulus, the mythological framework established by Prometheus and Covenant cannot be indefinitely ignored. The ambiguity surrounding the Engineers and the xenomorphs' origins represents a massive, unfinished chapter in the lore. Providing answers, even if through a separate future project, would offer invaluable depth and completeness to the entire saga. Without addressing this foundational narrative, the full potential of the Alien universe remains frustratingly untapped, leaving a void new entries cannot entirely fill.
