AceShowbiz - Fans of DC's superhero universe can now celebrate as the entire Shazam! film franchise, including both its acclaimed first installment and its recent sequel, is streaming for free. Despite initial critical and commercial success followed by subsequent challenges, these films are now accessible to U.S. audiences at no cost. As of Saturday, November 1, both Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods are available to stream on Tubi, offering a prime opportunity to revisit or discover these unique superhero adventures.
The original Shazam!, released on April 5, 2019, quickly captivated audiences and critics. As the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe, it stood out with its unique blend of humor, heart, and action. Its success was significantly bolstered by the remarkable performance of its ensemble cast, spearheaded by Zachary Levi. Critically acclaimed, the film secured a Certified Fresh 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box office triumph, grossing over $367 million worldwide against a modest $90–100 million production budget. It offered a refreshing take on the superhero genre, exploring themes of family and responsibility.
At its core, Shazam! introduces us to 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel), an orphan chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) to be his new champion. By uttering the wizard's name, Billy transforms into a powerful adult superhero (Zachary Levi) with a range of abilities. However, he must quickly learn to master these powers to confront the menacing Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), who seeks to harness Shazam's magical might for his own nefarious ends. Other notable cast members include Jack Dylan Grazer, who provides much of the film's comedic relief as Billy's foster brother, Freddy Freeman.
While the first film soared, its successors faced a tougher reception. The 2023 sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, saw Levi, Angel, and Hounsou return but failed to replicate the original's success. Directed by David F. Sandberg, with screenplays by Henry Gayden (who collaborated with Darren Lemke on the first and Chris Morgan on the second), the sequel earned a disappointing 49% on Rotten Tomatoes and only $134.1 million worldwide against its $110–125 million budget. The 2022 spin-off film Black Adam also underperformed, scoring 39% on Rotten Tomatoes and amassing $393 million worldwide against a substantial $190–$260 million budget.
The addition of both Shazam! films to Tubi's free library is a significant boon for superhero enthusiasts. They join a growing list of popular titles, including other fan-favorite superhero movies that recently arrived on the platform. Among these are Spider-Man: Homecoming, the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the 2004 adaptation of The Punisher, and its 2008 reboot, Punisher: War Zone. Tubi is fast becoming an essential destination for those seeking superhero action without a subscription, offering a diverse collection of caped crusaders and masked vigilantes.
