CBS's FBI spinoff "CIA" faces fresh turmoil! Michael Michele exits pivotal role amidst production delays & showrunner changes. Will it ever debut?
- November 2, 2025
AceShowbiz - CIA, the highly anticipated spinoff in CBS's popular FBI franchise, is reportedly facing another significant production hurdle. Veteran actress Michael Michele, slated for a pivotal role, has exited the project. This departure marks the latest in a series of shifts for the drama, which has already seen its premiere pushed back and a change in showrunners, signaling a complex path to its eventual debut.
Michele, known for her work in ER and Homicide: Life on the Street, was reportedly cast as the formidable boss of the CIA's New York Station. Her involvement was announced in September, following the April news that Tom Ellis (Lucifer) would headline as Hart Hoxton, a rule-bending CIA case officer. Chicago Med alum Nick Gehlfuss was set to portray Ellis' partner, a seasoned FBI agent whose traditional methods would clash with Hoxton's approach. Whether Michele's role will be recast remains unconfirmed.
The casting setback for CIA comes amidst broader creative restructuring. Originally slated for a 2024 debut, the spinoff's premiere has been delayed until 2026. This postponement was largely due to a change in leadership, with veteran producer Warren Leight (Law & Order: SVU) taking over as showrunner, replacing FBI: Most Wanted's David Hudgins. An earlier plan to introduce three main characters within the flagship FBI series before their transition to the spinoff has also been reportedly hampered by these ongoing adjustments.
Despite these challenges, the core concept of CIA remains steadfast. The series will explore the dynamic between Tom Ellis' rule-breaking CIA operative and Nick Gehlfuss' by-the-book FBI agent. Assigned to work together at the CIA's New York Station, their mission involves navigating dangerous cases while finding common ground. The cast also includes Natalee Linez as a CIA analyst. This spin-off aims to offer a fresh perspective within the procedural franchise, especially following the conclusions of FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted. Executive producers include Dick Wolf, Warren Leight, Nicole Perlman, David Chasteen, and Peter Jankowski, with production by Universal Television, Wolf Entertainment, and CBS Studios. These ongoing refinements suggest a commitment to delivering a well-balanced and intriguing new addition.
