AceShowbiz - For fans of Derek Cianfrance, the extended wait for his fifth feature film is finally drawing to a close. Opening nationwide on October 10, Roofman marks the acclaimed writer-director’s first cinematic release since 2016’s The Light Between Oceans. This highly anticipated return ends a near-decade-long drought on the big screen for the Colorado native, who has remained productive despite his absence from feature filmmaking.
During this period, Cianfrance prioritized being present for his two children through their adolescence. While developing narrative projects from home, he sustained his career by directing commercials, valuing their fewer shooting days. His notable spots for Nike Golf, Powerade, and Squarespace even earned him a prestigious 2017 DGA award for outstanding directorial achievement in commercials, showcasing his continued craft.
In 2020, Cianfrance made a significant return to fictional storytelling with HBO’s I Know This Much Is True. This limited series came to fruition after Mark Ruffalo approached him years prior to helm the project. Cianfrance not only directed but also wrote all six episodes, considering the premium cable endeavor a 'six-and-a-half-hour movie.' The collaboration proved fruitful, with Ruffalo earning an Emmy for his compelling dual role.
Intriguingly, this success with Ruffalo came despite the actor having once declined the role of Dean Pereira in Cianfrance’s breakout film, Blue Valentine (2010). Ruffalo, however, wasn't alone in turning down the part. Channing Tatum also passed on the role that ultimately went to Ryan Gosling, who starred opposite Michelle Williams’ Oscar-nominated performance.
Seventeen years after that initial refusal, fate brought Tatum and Cianfrance together for a stroll around Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Though they didn’t discuss Cianfrance’s then-in-progress script for Roofman, the director continued to write and rewrite the film with Kirt Gunn, now envisioning Tatum in the lead. This deliberate process paid off: Tatum received the tailor-made script in early 2024 and readily accepted the role of Jeffrey Manchester.
Manchester’s compelling story forms the core of Roofman, portraying an Army Veteran who remarkably transformed into a prolific armed robber. This narrative promises the intricate character study and emotional depth for which Derek Cianfrance is renowned, making his return to the big screen an event not to be missed.
