AceShowbiz - Yaya DaCosta, the 42-year-old model and actress who gained fame as the runner-up in "America's Next Top Model" (ANTM) cycle three, recently broke her silence about her relationship with Tyra Banks, the show's host.
This comes after Tyra Banks addressed some long-standing criticisms of "ANTM" at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards. Banks admitted that the show didn't always "get it right" and had moments of insensitivity, but nonetheless opened doors for many.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, DaCosta reflected on her "ANTM" experience, revealing the trauma she endured from what she described as "manipulative editing, and weaponization of girls' weaknesses. From catalyzing body dysmorphia to eating disorders. From anti-Blackness to blackface photo shoots."
However, DaCosta also mentioned the positives, stating she gained valuable tools that later benefited her career, including how to "regulate my nervous system."
DaCosta and Banks recently reunited at the ESSENCE awards event after years of no interaction. This chance meeting was a defining moment for DaCosta. Recalling the encounter, she said, "When I saw her, I was genuinely excited, and I walked over and we had a beautiful conversation."
They reminisced about their time on the show, and despite no explicit apology, DaCosta felt that Banks' speech at the event showed courage and the intent to acknowledge past mistakes.
Their brief reunion ended on a touching note. DaCosta shared, "I just took her into an embrace⦠y'all I held that woman and when it was time for the hug to be over, I held some more. And I took a deep breath because I wanted her to feel what it feels like to be fully forgiven, appreciated and loved."
This moment signified a form of closure for DaCosta, who expressed feeling "finally, legitimately free" from the negativity of her past experiences on "ANTM".
In her concluding thoughts, DaCosta imparted a powerful message to her followers. "I want y'all to be free," she said, encouraging others to embrace forgiveness, compassion, and kindness.
She firmly believes in the personal liberation that comes with letting go of past grievances, adding, "Forgiveness isn't for other people, it's for us."
