AceShowbiz - When "8 Mile" hit theaters in 2002, it marked Eminem's highly anticipated feature film debut, with a story loosely based on his early rap battles in Detroit. However, the film also heralded the first major film appearance of another rising star: Anthony Mackie.
This gritty portrayal of underground rap culture not only became a critical and commercial success, earning $242.8 million worldwide, but also launched Mackie into Hollywood's limelight.
The actor, who portrayed the character "Papa Doc," recently opened up about a clever trick played on him by Eminem during the film's shoot.
Appearing on "The Pivot Podcast", the Marvel star elaborated on how the Slim Shady, whom he described as "a brilliant dude," gained his personal details under the guise of strengthening their on-screen rivalry.
"We're on set one day and he's like, 'Yo, it don't make sense that we're beefing. I need something like on you,' " he recalled.
The next day, to Mackie's astonishment, those very details were used against his character in a crucial rap battle scene. "I'm standing there like, 'You're talking about me! You're not talking about Clarence!' " Mackie recalled with a laugh, referring to his character Papa Doc.
With a mix of humor and reminiscence, he joked that he wanted to fight the rapper for the unexpected move. "I'm like 'You're an a**hole, Eminem!' " he quipped. "Like, I wanna fight this motherf***er!"
Despite this playful betrayal, "8 Mile" was a pivotal moment for Mackie, propelling him into a series of successful roles in Hollywood, including appearances in "The Hurt Locker", "Notorious", and "The Adjustment Bureau".
His journey took a significant turn when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Sam Wilson, also known as the Falcon, in 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and has since appeared in multiple MCU films.
Mackie's portrayal of Sam Wilson brought him further acclaim, leading him to take on the iconic mantle of Captain America. He recently reprised his role in "Captain America: Brave New World" and is expected to return for "Avengers: Doomsday".
Not only did "8 Mile" become a launchpad for Mackie's career, but it also left an indelible mark as a cult classic, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Eminem's "Lose Yourself."
Anthony Mackie's journey from the backstreets of Detroit in "8 Mile" to donning the shield of Captain America is a testament to his versatile talent and dedication.
