AceShowbiz - Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, both 68, are showing their commitment to the Los Angeles community by donating $1 million to wildfire relief efforts.
This generous contribution comes after their $26 million Pacific Palisades mansion narrowly escaped the flames of the devastating fires that rocked the region in January. The couple, known for their longstanding careers in Hollywood, expressed their gratitude to the first responders who fought tirelessly to save homes and lives.
In a heartfelt joint statement shared on Instagram, Hanks and Wilson reflected on the scale of the disaster and the challenges ahead for affected communities.
"Like so many of us, we see the loss and devastation wrought by the Altadena and Palisades fires. The challenge of the future of these communities is immense," they wrote. "We are so very grateful for the first responders and firefighters, from all over, who fought with all they had in order to save homes and people."
The donation will be distributed among five organizations: the Motion Picture and Television Fund, the Los Angeles Fire Foundation, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, the American Red Cross, and MusiCares. Urging the public to join them in this cause, Hanks and Wilson added, "If you can, please join us in donating. Everything helps, right?"
Other celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Beyonce Knowles, Paris Hilton, and The Weeknd, have also stepped up to support the relief efforts. The collective actions of these stars highlight a widespread commitment to aiding the City of Angels during a critical period of recovery and rebuilding.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass recently took decisive action by firing LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, citing her decision to dismiss 1,000 firefighters on the day the fires broke out as a significant misstep.
Bass appointed 41-year LAFD veteran and former Chief Deputy Ronnie Villanueva as the new Interim Fire Chief, aiming to bolster public safety and improve the operational readiness of the fire department.
