AceShowbiz - Gerard Butler recently divulged the harrowing experiences the cast endured while filming the 2006 historical action film "300". Injuries were so frequent that hospital visits became a daily routine, shedding new light on the physical toll actors face in the pursuit of authenticity.
In a People interview promoting his new film "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera", actor Gerard Butler opened up about the extraordinary hardships faced by the cast of "300", directed by Zack Snyder. Butler, who played King Leonidas of Sparta, recalled that the intense training and battle sequences led to numerous severe injuries requiring medical attention.
"I remember every day somebody was getting taken to the hospital," Butler revealed. "You'd be doing a fight, you turn around, there's a guy down there, a spear went in his eye. Another time, you turn around, there's a guy over there who just fell, broke his ankle. I mean, it was insane."
The movie, released in 2006, aimed for authenticity in its portrayal of Spartan warriors, and this commitment took a significant physical toll on the actors. While Butler himself didn't elaborate on his own injuries during the filming of "300", he admitted to experiencing over-use injuries in one arm and one foot.
Butler also discussed other substantial injuries he has sustained throughout his career. During the filming of "Chasing Mavericks" in 2012, he nearly drowned after being struck by massive waves. "I thought I was done. They had to take me out, take me to hospital, put me out, give me the defibrillator. I mean, it was intense," he recalled.
The action star recounted yet another dangerous incident while working with Pierce Brosnan on "Butterfly on a Wheel". He described how Pierce accidentally drove him into a wall during a high-speed car chase scene, resulting in a severe neck injury.
"We hit a wall on a rooftop, 3-foot-high wall, full speed, in a Range Rover. It destroyed my neck, and it was after 300. I was already so beaten up in 300," Butler said.
Despite these mishaps, Butler expressed an unwavering passion for stunt work. "It's awesome. I wouldn't change it for the world," he told O'Shea Jackson Jr., his co-star in "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera".
Not all his on-set dangers were self-inflicted. Butler mentioned accidentally getting Hilary Swank injured while filming "P.S. I Love You" and almost shooting Angelina Jolie in the face during "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life". "I was coming down, hanging upside down. I had to fire a gun, but I had no control over where this thing went. So I was just firing and I just missed it," he recounted.
While Butler's stories reflect the extreme demands of action filmmaking, they also highlight his enduring dedication to bringing riveting performances to the screen, injuries notwithstanding. His current film, "Den of Thieves 2: Pantera", is now playing in theaters.
