"My family flew out from South Africa for Christmas, and we were going to do Christmas in our house so both families were here. We were opening presents, and then for the very last present he asked me to close my eyes because it was a surprise," Booysen told PEOPLE.

The surprise was meticulously planned by Donaldson, who sought to create a private and intimate experience rather than a public spectacle. He intentionally dropped a large box to make noise before presenting the real gift - a diamond ring on a rose gold band with additional diamonds. Donaldson knelt down on one knee and proposed, catching Booysen completely off guard. Her response was a resounding "yes."

"I was trying to think of the best way to catch her off guard so it would be a surprise," Donaldson explained. "Thea is really close to her family, so I wanted to make sure that they were included in this momentous occasion."

The couple first met in 2022 when Donaldson visited Cape Town, South Africa, and bonded over their shared interests in gaming and education. Their relationship quickly blossomed, leading to several cross-continental visits and public appearances, including their debut at the Kids Choice Awards in April 2022.

Thea Booysen, who boasts a master's degree in human cognitive neuropsychology from the University of Edinburgh alongside degrees in psychology and law, has always admired Donaldson's intelligence and character. Their connection deepened over time, culminating in the romantic holiday proposal.

As the couple looks forward to their wedding, they have hinted at a private island ceremony with close family and friends. Both have expressed a desire to keep the event intimate and away from the public eye. Donaldson emphasized the importance of taking time away to celebrate with loved ones.

"We're thinking of doing it somewhere on an island where we're far away from just about everybody," Booysen said. "We're not going to try and have a big, extravagant wedding."
