Ruby, 38, took to Instagram on December 22 to express her grief and myriad emotions surrounding her father's death. In a poignant post, she wrote, "RIP Dad. You leave me. Alone. With so many complex emotions."

The post revealed the nuanced and difficult relationship they shared, marked by estrangement and eventual reconnection.

In a follow-up post on Wednesday, December 25, Ruby detailed the challenges they faced and the emotional rollercoaster that came with reconnecting. "R.I.P and Merry Christmas Dad. I am glad we reconnected a few years ago, not because you had changed all that much, not because it brought me all that much joy, it's actually been very hard," she wrote on Instagram.

"You know that. You were very hard. I cut you off twice in that time lol. Once for a year. But our last emails were right before you died. Mine was a kind email and I'm glad."

Ruby also shared her father's traumatic past, alluding to the abuse he endured as a child at the hands of St Augustine's orphanage in Melbourne. She poignantly noted, "I found it very hard to hear about what happened to you as a child. What happened to all of your siblings at the hands of St Augustine's and other orphanages and boys homes in Melbourne. Brother Houston I hope you rot in jail."

Former Christian Brother William Houston was found guilty of assaulting two boys and was sentenced to seven years in jail for buggery and three counts of indecent assault, as reported by The Daily Mail. His conviction in 2021 added to a previous sentence for abusing six other boys in the 1960s.

Ruby expressed her sorrow and empathy towards her father's unspoken traumas. "None of this undoes the abuse I incurred down the line, but it helped me understand you," she continued. "To try to understand you was to love you. R.I.P dad I'm very sorry no one protected you. I'm very sorry life was not so much more. I'm devastated really. You're probably blown away by how sad I am. if you can see me."

She also shared a poignant if somewhat surreal wish, referring to her father's beliefs and connections, "Although I refused to believe your friend Brian Marshall was Jesus, I mean heck, he ran an anti LBGT cult.. I do very much hope he is wherever you are and you are surrounded by family and friends."

Despite the bitterness and lack of closure, Ruby concluded with forgiveness, stating, "P.s I don't think you ever really said sorry. Not really. You didn't know where to begin, but I forgave you. And I still do."
